Job summary

UPMC is seeking a Registered Respiratory Therapist to provide life-supporting respiratory care under physician supervision. The role involves assessing patients, operating and maintaining respiratory equipment, and collaborating closely with the healthcare team to optimize outcomes.

The position requires delivering compassionate care across all ages, responding to emergencies, and educating patients and families about treatment plans while ensuring safety and accuracy in documentation.

Responsibilities

• Assess patients and review medical histories, orders, and clinical data to tailor respiratory therapy.
• Set up, operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain ventilators and oxygen delivery systems.
• Monitor responses, collect arterial blood gases, perform pulse oximetry and EKGs, adjust therapy with physicians.
• Perform procedures including bronchopulmonary drainage, airway clearance; breathing exercises; bronchoscopy support; tracheostomy assistance.
• Respond to emergencies including Rapid Response, Code Blue, trauma activations.
• Maintain accurate patient documentation and ensure infection prevention and equipment safety standards.
• Educate patients, families, trainees, and healthcare staff on respiratory care plans.
• Provide care to patients across all ages with age-appropriate competencies and compassion.
• Assist departmental operations by coordinating workflow and supporting staffing as needed.
