Critical Care Paramedic Transport Specialist II, $10K Sign-on Bonus

General Summary

Functions as a member of a highly effective, high-acuity, high-volume critical care transport team. Team members in this role are expected to work collaboratively and respond quickly and appropriately in fast-paced clinical situations requiring immediate action both in and out of the hospital environment.

The CCTS2 has an expanded paramedic scope of practice and provides high-acuity critical care and emergency ground/surface transportation for patient populations including stroke, STEMI, trauma, medical, surgical, cardiac, neurologic, high-risk obstetrics, neonatal, and pediatric cases. The CCTS2 collaborates with physician medical directors, critical care transport nurse specialists, and providers to deliver advanced medical therapies and interventions. This role operates under (1) MEC clinical guidelines and (2) MIEMSS protocols when appropriate. It involves close coordination with sending and receiving healthcare facilities to develop comprehensive transport plans and includes patients of all ages.

In addition to transport duties, the CCTS2 participates in operational teams working on organizational initiatives.

Principal Responsibilities and Duties

The following describes the general nature and level of work performed. It is not an exhaustive list of all duties.

Clinical Practice/Care Delivery

  • Independently provides, directs, and coordinates clinical care within the critical care transport environment, accountable for care processes and outcomes.
  • Conducts comprehensive patient assessments, integrating multiple data sources to identify needs and problems.
  • Monitors patients systematically for clinical signs and symptoms.
  • Assesses patient needs during transport and implements tailored care plans.
  • Coordinates effective transportation between facilities.
  • Works with the UMAC and multidisciplinary teams to plan patient care.
  • Under physician orders or MEC guidelines, initiates life support therapies including medication administration, IV/intraosseous therapies, EKG monitoring, arrhythmia interpretation, CPR, defibrillation, airway management, intubation, cricothyrotomy, ventilator management, needle decompression, and advanced life-sustaining procedures, including ECMO and IABP management.
  • Responds to crisis interventions and external requests.
  • Provides detailed reports to receiving teams during transport.
  • Uses hospital resources to ensure comprehensive patient and family care.
  • Revises care plans based on patient status changes.
  • Continuously monitors and stabilizes critically ill patients during transport, adjusting care as needed.
  • Participates in chart reviews for evaluation and learning.

Professional Development

  • Maintains required competencies and pursues ongoing professional growth.
  • Acts as a preceptor for new MEC employees.
  • Serves as a clinical resource for team members.
  • Attends mandatory training, in-services, and education sessions.

Service Quality and Safety

  • Supports process improvement initiatives, including data collection.
  • Recognizes and addresses patient/family issues proactively.

Operations

  • Supports charge RN and senior specialists.
  • Demonstrates teamwork and flexibility.
  • Participates in governance and organizational committees.
  • Leads or contributes to educational and quality improvement projects.
  • Provides peer feedback as requested.
  • Supports guidelines for a healthy work environment per AACN standards.
  • Provides care appropriate to the patient population, considering growth and development needs.

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Nationally Registered Paramedic certification.
  • Maryland Paramedic license.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a paramedic in a high-volume, high-acuity EMS system.
  • At least 2 years of experience in critical care inter-facility transport.
  • Active AHA BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications or equivalents; determination of equivalency is made by MEC Medical Director and Nurse Manager.

Post-Hire Certifications

  • NRP within 6 months.
  • STABLE within 6 months.
  • Critical care paramedic (CCP-C) or Flight Paramedic (FP-C) within 18 months.
  • Complete UMMS critical care transport orientation and obtain Medical Director approval.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficient in care of diverse patient populations with varying acuity.
  • Effective in resource management during transfers.
  • Knowledge of organizational and operational principles, including budgeting and regulations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to assess and respond to patient needs across the lifespan.
  • Ensures patient safety and participates in safety initiatives.
  • Reports risks and adverse events appropriately.

Compensation:

Pay Range: $27.44-$38.41
