Qualifications

Faculty Position - BE/BC Critical Care Intensivist

The Department of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC is seeking board-eligible or board-certified intensivists to join our faculty in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) at UPMC Presbyterian. We welcome applications from clinicians, clinician-educators, and clinician-scientists who are committed to delivering high-quality multidisciplinary care, educating trainees, and contributing to the academic mission of the department.

The successful candidate will provide attending-level critical care for a high-acuity cardiothoracic population, including patients after cardiac and thoracic surgery; patients with cardiogenic shock, respiratory failure, pulmonary hypertension, advanced heart failure, or complex arrhythmias; and patients requiring temporary or durable mechanical circulatory support, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, ventricular assist devices, Impella support, or intra-aortic balloon pump therapy. The role requires clinical judgment, advanced hemodynamic management, effective communication, and the ability to work closely with cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, cardiology, heart failure, transplant, perfusion, advanced practice providers, nursing, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

Primary responsibilities include providing clinical coverage in the CTICU at UPMC Presbyterian; leading multidisciplinary ICU rounds; developing and implementing evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic plans; supervising and teaching fellows, residents, medical students, and advanced practice providers; maintaining timely and accurate documentation; participating in quality improvement, patient safety, and operational initiatives; and supporting an inclusive learning and clinical environment. Faculty may also have opportunities to provide clinical care in other ICUs across the UPMC Health System based on departmental needs, clinical expertise, and mutual agreement.

Minimum objective qualifications; other desirable qualifications:

Applicants must hold an MD or DO degree, be board-certified or board-eligible in critical care medicine by a United States accreditation board and be eligible for medical licensure in Pennsylvania. Base training may include internal medicine, emergency medicine, surgery, anesthesiology, neurology, or another relevant discipline with accredited critical care training. Required qualifications include excellent communication skills, professionalism, sound clinical judgment, and a commitment to teamwork, education, patient-centered care, and a respectful and inclusive academic environment. Prior clinical experience or focused training in cardiothoracic critical care, ECMO, mechanical circulatory support, advanced hemodynamic management, perioperative cardiothoracic care, echocardiography, quality improvement, education, or clinical research is desirable but not required.

The department is also a national leader in critical care education, faculty development, quality improvement, and research, with programs that span clinical care, translational science, population health, implementation science, and health services research.

Rank and/or title; salary range or minimum:

Academic appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor in the non-tenure stream, commensurate with qualifications, experience, and academic accomplishments.
