Job Summary

Provides Critical Care Transport Paramedic (CCTP) level of care, within the scope of Act 37, to Life Flight patients in conjunction with the Flight Nurse. The Critical Care Transport Paramedic functions and assists as a non-essential team member in Geisinger Emergency Departments and collaborates with Emergency department healthcare providers to deliver care to Emergency Department patients as needed. The Critical Care Transport Paramedic is qualified to provide care for patients across the lifespan, from birth to over 100 years.

Job Duties

  1. Provides critical care transport at the paramedic level until patient care is relinquished to an accepting medical facility.
  2. Maintains thorough patient care documentation in the electronic medical record. Practices within the paramedic scope of practice as defined by a medical command physician, or as needed under the written guidelines of the Seven Mountains EMS Council Regional Protocols or the Department of Health EMS ACT 37. Maintains competency in knowledge and psychomotor skills through ongoing laboratory and clinical experiences.
  3. Communicates educational needs to the Chief Flight Nurse, Regional Supervisors, Medical Director, CEPs, and the Life Flight Educator as required.
  4. Maintains Pennsylvania Department of Health medical command status.
  5. If not previously certified, acquires the FP-C credential within one year of hire.
  6. Functions as a critical care flight team member and Critical Care Transport Paramedic with an expanded scope of practice approved by the Life Flight Medical Director and Pennsylvania Department of Health.
  7. The scope of practice expansion is applicable only to licensed Air–Ambulance programs in the commonwealth.
  8. May function in a non-essential per diem role in Emergency Departments to the level permitted by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
  9. Maintains competency in the use and routine maintenance of all equipment and supplies used by Life Flight.
  10. Ensures cleanliness, organization, and proper equipment of all Life Flight helicopters.
  11. Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and equipment at each Life Flight base site.
  12. Ensures an orderly environment and cleanliness of helipads at all hangar locations.
  13. Acts as a flight crew member and assists the pilot as needed.
  14. Follows safety standards during all phases of flight to ensure safety of self, crew, patient, and equipment.
  15. Participates in preflight briefings and post-flight debriefings.
  16. Acts as a preceptor and participates in orientation of new employees and students as assigned.
  17. Assists in safety briefings as needed.
  18. Maintains awareness of current issues related to paramedics through participation in professional activities.
  19. Participates in all Life Flight educational requirements to maintain active status.
  20. Identifies processes or systems that could potentially lead to errors and adverse events.
  21. Participates in organizational and departmental patient safety education programs and activities.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Works in a patient care environment around aircraft, exposed to infectious diseases and chemical toxins. May require sitting for long periods in helicopter or office. Ability to lift at least 50 pounds. Exposed to motion, noise, vibration, fumes, and extreme temperatures. Travel may be required. Employee weight in flight gear must not exceed 250 lbs. Must comply with all policies and procedures. Additional competencies outlined in department-specific orientation are considered essential.
