Position Summary

The Crisis Stabilization Technician is a member of the Crisis Receiving and Stabilization Services (CRSS) team and provides direct support and stabilization services to adults experiencing a behavioral health or substance use crisis. The Crisis Stabilization Technician works as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide a safe, supportive, and trauma-informed environment while assisting individuals with stabilization, skill development, treatment planning, and connection to ongoing services.

The Crisis Stabilization Technician provides services within the scope of the Other Behavioral Health Provider (OBHP) role and under the direct supervision of clinical staff. The position supports the individual’s identified treatment and recovery goals through structured interventions, skills practice, care coordination, and ongoing observation of changes in presentation and functioning.

  • Function as a member of the Crisis Receiving and Stabilization Services (CRSS) team and participate in a multidisciplinary approach to crisis care.
  • Provide direct support and stabilization services to individuals admitted to CRSS.
  • Assist with creating and maintaining a safe, supportive, recovery-oriented, and trauma-informed environment.
  • Establish therapeutic rapport with consumers and provide respectful, person-centered support throughout the stabilization process.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, review, and updating of individualized treatment and aftercare plans within the scope of the OBHP role and organizational requirements.
  • Assist consumers in identifying treatment goals, strengths, needs, barriers, coping strategies, and resources related to stabilization and recovery.
  • Provide structured skills development and practice related to emotional regulation, coping, communication, problem-solving, distress tolerance, daily living, and other identified treatment needs.
  • Conduct and assist with therapeutic and educational activities designed to support stabilization and recovery.
  • Provide supportive interventions, de-escalation, behavioral support, and environmental interventions as appropriate.
  • Reinforce recovery-oriented behaviors, progress toward treatment goals, and effective use of coping strategies.
  • Assist consumers in identifying natural supports and community resources that may support continued recovery following discharge.
  • Participate in care coordination and discharge planning, including assisting with safety planning, referrals, appointments, transportation resources, and connection to ongoing services.
  • Communicate with outpatient treatment teams, family members, caregivers, community providers, and other involved supports as permitted by law and organizational policy.
  • Observe and monitor consumer presentation, behavior, functioning, and response to interventions and communicate significant changes or concerns to clinical and medical staff.
  • Participate in ongoing reassessment and stabilization activities by reporting changes in symptoms, behavior, functioning, or safety concerns to the appropriate team member.
  • Assist with maintaining awareness of consumer needs and progress throughout the CRSS stay and communicate relevant information during shift handoffs and team consultations.
  • Provide consumer education within the scope of training and credentials.
  • Assist consumers in preparing for transition from CRSS to the next appropriate level of care and support successful connection to identified services.
  • Complete required follow-up activities and communicate concerns regarding unsuccessful connections or changes in Consumer needs to appropriate staff.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and objective documentation of services, interventions, Consumer response, treatment plan activities, behavioral observations, care coordination, and other required information in the EMR.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and protect Consumer confidentiality.
  • Use inclusive, culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented language and approaches.
  • Maintain current knowledge of community behavioral health, substance use, crisis, housing, medical, and social service resources.
  • Participate in treatment team meetings, shift handoffs, case consultations, staff meetings, training, quality improvement activities, and emergency preparedness exercises.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe environment and report safety, supply, or maintenance concerns to appropriate staff.
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations and immediately communicate safety concerns to appropriate clinical, medical, or supervisory staff.
  • Follow applicable laws, regulations, ethical standards, confidentiality requirements, mandated-reporting obligations, and HCI policies and procedures.
  • Ability to use an electronic medical record (EMR) system to review relevant information, document services and interactions accurately and promptly prior to end of shift, update required records regarding Consumer care, complete all required forms and documentation depending on crisis interaction, and protect confidential information.
  • Verify Consumer insurance policies or connect Consumers with Navigator for assistance in obtaining healthcare coverage. Ability to accurately set up billing for services in EMR.
  • Monitor to ensure maintenance of a clean, orderly, and safe work environment reporting needs for supplies, repair, or maintenance to appropriate staff.
  • Attend scheduled team meetings to collaborate with colleagues and management, discuss individual cases, and contribute to overall program development.
  • Participate in the required ongoing clinical supervision after completing HCI OBHP training modules.

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements
  • Associate’s Degree in related field or;
  • An individual with at least 12 months of paid, full time employment or 24 months of paid, part time employment in a directly related adult, child, youth, adolescent or family services related field including but not limited to the following professions: Community Mental Health Center, Group Home, Residential Placement facilities, Personal Care giver, State Hospital, Certified Nursing Assistant, Licensed Professional Nurse, Department of Children’s Services, Family and Social Services Administration, Education/Special Education, Nursing Home, Day Care providers/staff, Juvenile Justice Centers, Community Corrections/Probation, FQHC, Hospitals, Hospice
  • One year experience in crisis related field preferred.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the natural history of mental disorders and the relevant biological and socio-cultural factors.
  • Understanding and knowledgeable of the range of treatment needed and appropriate utilization of available resources.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Valid driver’s license in accordance with HCI motor vehicle policy.
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) - certification must be obtained after hire and prior to providing direct consumer care. This certification must be maintained and kept current throughout employment.
  • American Red Cross CPR/First Aid - certification must be obtained after hire and prior to providing direct consumer care. This certification must be maintained and kept current throughout employment.

Most of the work is completed within the office of community setting. Conditions such as safety, cleanliness, and comfort vary.

Work may cause emotional stress involving working with people who are often distraught and unpredictable. the Mobile Crisis Specialist may regularly encounter emotionally intense situations and must remain calm, attentive, and effective while supporting individuals experiencing acute distress.
