Job description

Position Summary

The CCBHC Crisis Diversion Specialist will provide case coordination, outreach, advocacy services, initial screening and referral to connect consumers with needed resources within the Center's comprehensive consumer services framework.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities
  • Assist in conducting initial evaluations, assessing consumer presenting problems and mental status exam items.
  • Work as part of a 24‑hour crisis stabilization hub providing crisis services and mobile crisis unit support.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement and community agencies to reduce risk of emergency room and psychiatric hospitalization.
  • After stabilization, connect individuals to appropriate level of care.
  • Provide consumer education within expertise and credential limits.
  • Attend meetings, receive supervision, and maintain ethical conduct regarding confidentiality.
  • Perform clerical tasks: compose, edit, and type correspondence, reports, data entry, staff time reporting, billing inquiries, retrieve clinical charts, answer and screen telephone calls.
  • Complete intake and registration, schedule appointments, instruct consumers and families on documentation required.
  • Verify insurance policies, obtain prior authorization for inpatient stays, set up billing in EMR.
  • Maintain the Crisis Diversion Daily Log and coordinate with on‑call psychiatrist.
  • Notify outpatient therapists of overnight and weekend contacts.
  • Assist clinicians with emergency screening and records.
  • Serve as a community resource on mental health services, referral sources, and emergency detention procedures.
  • Participate in cross‑training with other Crisis Diversion staff.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications / Requirements
  • One year of experience in a crisis‑related field.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated competence in assessment and treatment planning for medical and psychiatric patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Knowledge of the natural history of mental disorders and relevant biological and socio‑cultural factors.
  • Understanding of treatment needs and appropriate utilization of available resources.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Active American Red Cross CPR and First Aid certifications.
  • Active Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification.
  • Valid driver’s license per HCI motor vehicle policy.
Physical Demands

Work may involve emotional stress such as interacting with distraught and unpredictable individuals and making decisions regarding dangerousness, suicide potential, competency, or reality contact.

Work Environment
  • 40+ hour work week.
  • Overtime available after 40 hours.
  • On‑call schedule in support of crisis.
  • Nights and weekends periodically.
Conditions of Employment
  • Completion of tuberculin screening within four days of hiring and annually thereafter.
  • Completion of MMR, Varicella, influenza, and coronavirus vaccination.
  • Pre‑employment drug screening, with post‑employment testing upon reasonable suspicion.
  • Successful reference and background checks.
  • Comprehensive background checks (Indiana Department of Child Services, State Criminal History, etc.) upon hire and every four years or at contract renewal.
  • Completion of center‑wide orientation and all required paperwork before reporting to work.
  • Completion of HCI training modules, Professional Development Plan, Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Training, CPR/First Aid Training, and Trauma Informed Care/ e‑learning.
  • Attendance at mandatory staff development and training.
  • Successful completion of six‑month on‑the‑job orientation.
  • Participation in electronic payroll deposit.
  • Adherence to Compliance Program Plan.
