Now Hiring: Part-Time Shelter Support Staff – Young Adult Shelter (YAS)


Location: 3104 E. Augusta Avenue, Spokane, WA 99207
Status: Part-Time (Various Shifts Available)

At the Young Adult Shelter (YAS), a Volunteers of America (VOA) program, we provide a safe and supportive environment for young adults aged 18–24 experiencing homelessness or other life challenges. Open 365 days a year, YAS offers essential services such as meals, housing support, behavioral health care, and compassionate connection.

We’re seeking part-time Shelter Support Staff to join our dedicated team. This role is ideal for individuals who want to make a meaningful impact in the lives of young people while working flexible hours.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build trust with youth through respectful, trauma-informed interactions.
  • Complete intake assessments and gather critical client information.
  • Provide behavioral health support by engaging in and documenting meaningful interactions.
  • Collaborate with case managers and behavioral health staff to support service plans.
  • Maintain accurate records and support tracking of services provided.
  • Assist with daily shelter operations, including meal service, hygiene supply distribution, and maintaining cleanliness and safety.
  • Uphold shelter expectations while creating a space of dignity and calm.

Requirements

What You Bring
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must be 21 years or older
  • Eligible to apply for an Agency Affiliated Counselor (AAC) credential within 30 days of hire
  • Willingness to obtain the following certifications within 6 months (VOA will support):
    • CPR/First Aid
    • Food Handler’s Permit
  • Ability to pass a background check and access to reliable transportation
Preferred Experience
  • Experience working with high-risk youth or young adults
  • Familiarity with crisis response or shelter environments
  • Understanding of trauma-informed care, harm reduction, or Positive Youth Development (PYD)
  • Strong interpersonal and documentation skills
