Position Summary

The Crisis Intervention Counselor is responsible for evaluating, assessing, diagnosis and providing psychosocial expertise as a member of the emergency department team. The counselor will participate as part of the emergency department team to provide additional case management services including assistance with identification and utilization of resources, triage cases, provide assistance to BEST team, assisting in the disposition of patients, assist psychiatric residents and attending physicians. This position requires the ability to work independently in an acute care setting.

Schedule: Part Time, (Per Diem)

Essential Responsibilities / Duties

  • Provide clinical and administrative work for the psychiatry service located in the emergency department for adult, adolescent and child patient populations.
  • Provide evaluations to assigned patients who present in the emergency room, triage the referrals, provide case management services as needed.
  • Collaborate with other clinical staff are share the responsibility for clinical coverage in the Emergency Department as assigned
  • Coordinate the evaluation of patient’s presenting in the emergency department with the psychiatrist on service for those deemed at risk of harming themselves or others or those presenting with complex symptomatology with psychiatric disorders.
  • Serve as a liaison to BEST team for provision of services to BEST patients.
  • Utilize crisis intervention skills in the treatment of acute patient population
  • Screen cases of neglect, abuse or other crises.
  • Serve as a liaison with related agencies for the disposition of patients who are felt to be requiring psychiatric hospitalization.
  • Completes all applications, as requested by Boston Medical Center or the Department of Psychiatry, to third party payors in order to enroll in insurance panels for reimbursement for outpatient clinic services by insurers. Maintains active credentialing with third party payors once included in panel.
  • Participates in data Department’s Quality Improvement Activities which may include data collection, assessment and reporting as assigned.
  • Maintains updated patient record documentation, including patient assessments, treatment plans and progress notes consistent with Department and Hospital Policy and Procedures.
  • Maintains one's credential status in the hospital; maintains updated annual licensure.
  • Contributes to the Utilization Review of patient records in the Division as assigned.
  • Contributes to the risk management activities of the Division
  • Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, so that the best possible customer service and patient care may be provided.
  • Utilizes hospital’s Values as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the division’s hospital mission.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.

Education

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Masters degree in Social Work (MSW), Masters in Counseling, Masters in Education or Masters in Psychology required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required

  • Applicable licenses (such as LICSW or LMHC) preferred.

Experience

  • Three years related experience preferred; crisis counseling experience preferred.

Knowledge And Skills

  • Knowledge of community resources and agencies that will benefit our patient population.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with various healthcare professionals and to develop & maintain effective therapeutic relationships with patients and families
  • Must be comfortable in a fast paced and dynamic work environment (sense of humor is valued).
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Cultural sensitivity and comfort with a wide range of racial and ethnic populations. Bicultural/Bilingual competency a plus.
  • Basic computer proficiency inclusive of ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information.
