Overview
Stellar Virtual is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Crisis Counselor to support the emotional and mental well-being of K-12 students in alignment with Texas state guidelines for crisis counseling in education. The Crisis Counselor will serve as a critical resource in providing immediate support during crises, helping students develop coping skills, and promoting a safe and supportive virtual learning environment. This role is pivotal in ensuring the emotional resilience of our students as they navigate the challenges of a virtual school setting.
Essential Duties
- Immediate Crisis Response
- Assess and respond to students in emotional, behavioral, or psychological crisis.
- Provide de-escalation and stabilization support during emergencies.
- Administer suicide risk and threat assessments, following district protocol.
- Coordinate referrals to emergency services or community mental health providers.
- Student Support & Intervention
- Offer short-term, solution-focused counseling for students affected by trauma, grief, or crisis situations.
- Develop safety plans for students at risk of self-harm or harm to others.
- Facilitate re-entry planning for students following hospitalization or long-term absence.
- Train staff on recognizing signs of distress, suicide warning signs, and how to report concerns.
- Help implement school-wide crisis response plans.
- Serve as a liaison between school staff, families, and community agencies.
- Document and communicate interventions, safety concerns, and outcomes to relevant personnel while respecting confidentiality laws.
- Engage families and caregivers in the crisis resolution process and follow-up care.
Knowledge, Skills & Attributes
- Minimum of two years of experience in counseling, with a focus on crisis intervention or school counseling preferred.
- Strong understanding of Texas Education Code § 33.005-33.007 related to counselor responsibilities.
- Understanding of trauma-informed practices, suicide prevention, de-escalation, and risk assessment.
- Familiarity with emergency response plans, threat assessment processes, and behavioral intervention strategies.
- Ability to quickly identify risk and implement safety protocols, including suicide or violence risk assessments.
- Skill in building rapport with distressed students, calming escalated behaviors, and collaborating with stakeholders.
- Capacity to make sound, ethical decisions under pressure and adapt to dynamic situations.
- Strong written communication skills to document interventions, safety plans, and referrals clearly and legally.
Education & Certification Requirements
- A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
- A bachelor's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field is preferred.
- Texas state certification as a School Counselor (or eligibility to obtain certification) or licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or equivalent.
