Qualifications

• Hold a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
• Be licensed to practice law in North Carolina or be eligible for admission within a reasonable period after hire.
• Be eligible to appear in North Carolina state courts.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Be organized and capable of managing multiple cases and court deadlines.
• Be willing to regularly appear in courts throughout Lenoir, Greene, and Wayne Counties.
• Be willing to accept appropriate court-appointed cases and meet appointment requirements.

Responsibilities

• Represent clients in North Carolina District and Superior Courts.
• Handle traffic citations and criminal traffic offenses.
• Represent clients charged with misdemeanors.
• Represent clients charged with lower-level felonies, with progression to more serious felony cases as experience develops.
• Apply for and maintain eligibility for court-appointed counsel lists in Lenoir, Greene, and Wayne Counties.
• Conduct client interviews and consultations.
• Review discovery, police reports, body-camera footage, witness statements, laboratory reports, and other evidence.
• Identify factual, constitutional, evidentiary, and procedural issues.
• Develop case strategies and defenses.
• Negotiate with prosecutors and evaluate plea offers.
• Prepare and file motions and other court documents.
• Prepare for and conduct District Court trials and Superior Court proceedings.
• Participate in jury-trial preparation and, with supervision, conduct jury trials.
• Prepare witnesses for hearings and trials.
• Advocate for clients during sentencing hearings.
• Maintain regular communication with clients and case notes.
