Criminal Justice Specialist - Sheriff's Office

Position Information

There are several locations within the Cobb County Sheriff's Office that the Criminal Justice Specialist is assigned. This position requires shift work depending on the area assigned. Consideration for education and experience will be given for starting salary.

Work Schedule

  • Adult Detention Center: 12‑hour shifts, 0600–1800 or 1800–0600. Shift differential: $1.00 extra per hour for 1800–0600, plus $1.30 per hour for detention pay. Varied off‑day assignments.
  • Warrant Room: 8 or 10‑hour shift depending on assignment. Three shifts: Day, Evening, Overnight. Evening differential: $0.50 per hour; overnight differential: $1.00 per hour. Varied off‑day assignments.
  • Court Security: 8‑hour shifts Monday through Friday, 0600–1900.

Essential Functions

  • Ensures the security and safety of inmates: prevents injury, responds to alarms, provides information on charges, bonding, attorneys, and personal interactions.
  • Manages security control rooms, monitors inmates and security/fire systems, controls movement within monitored areas, ensures inmates are safely maintained.
  • Maintains accurate counts of detainees, records and ensures current information is entered into the Records Management System.
  • Performs intake and receipt of inmate property; inventories detainee property, compiles with booking, release orders, and procedures. Coordinates visitation for detainees, medical, attorneys or religious services.
  • Operates Security Electronics System, intercom, radio equipment, computer terminal, telephone and key‑control systems.
  • Ensures security and safety of facility staff and visitors: monitors visitor access, conducts contraband searches, and escorts visitors within the facility.
  • Secures facility keys, receives status and incident reports, and follows special instructions from other personnel.
  • Inspects incoming mail and packages for contraband and non‑permitted items; delivers, packages mail, and delivers items to detainees.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required; two years of administrative support experience preferred, demonstrated with computer literacy skills in standard software applications.

Licenses and Certifications

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License; maintain GCIC certification.

Physical Abilities

Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling moderately heavy objects (20–50 pounds).

Sensory Requirements

Some tasks require ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues; some tasks require oral communication.

Environmental Factors

Performance of essential functions involves frequent exposure to fumes, odors, airborne particles, excessive noise, communicable disease, and confrontational persons.
