We are seeking Criminal Patrol Deputies who are in good standing with their current or most recent employer as a sworn Police Officer for a recognized state, county, city, or municipal entity. Those who are currently certified as Police Officers in Oregon, or able to obtain Oregon DPSST certification if a police officer in another state through a DPSST Career Officer Development Course, are eligible to apply for our lateral police officer position.

The Linn County Sheriff’s Office offers negotiable starting salary (based on step) depending on experience and years of current certified police work. We offer a full benefits package which includes medical, dental and vision. In addition, Linn County contributes 2% (of base wages) into a HRA/VEBA account each month, and the county picks up the employee PERS contribution, and an additional county contribution of 3% into a Deferred Compensation plan of the employees choosing. We also offer certification and education pay incentives. Laterals are also offered a condensed Field Training Program (FTEP).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY: Some knowledge of the pertinent Federal, State and local laws and ordinances, including traffic, criminal, civil, juvenile, fish and game and marine statutes. Some knowledge of investigatory procedures and the gathering and preservation of evidence. Some knowledge of the use of law enforcement equipment including firearms, vehicles, radios and Intoxilyzers. Demonstrated skill in the efficient and safe use of firearms and motor vehicles, including the operation of vehicles at high speeds and under adverse road conditions. Ability to learn a considerable amount of factual material relating to laws, ordinances, procedures and regulations, and apply this knowledge to on-the-job situations. Ability to comprehend and interpret laws, ordinances and regulations. Ability to understand sometimes complex oral and written instructions and to act upon them accordingly. Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, exercising considerable judgment to determine a proper course of action, in some instances without consulting a supervisor. Ability to prepare clear, concise and comprehensive reports. Ability to assist persons undergoing emotional stress or mental disorder while maintaining a professional and objective posture. Ability to exercise appropriate physical actions in the arrest and restraint of persons to insure the safety of all persons. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow officers, supervisors, complainants, crime victims and suspects, witnesses and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed indoors and outdoors in a variety of environments in all weather conditions. Work requirements include being able to see (Corrected vision shall be at least 20/30 (Snellen) in each eye. Uncorrected vision worse than 20/100 shall wear soft contact lenses to meet corrected vision requirements. Uncorrected vision of 20/100 or better may wear glasses with frames to meet the corrected vision requirement. Color discrimination, binocular coordination and peripheral vision must be normal.) Additional requirements are the ability to talk and hear (have no significant hearing loss), sit and stand, read and write, walk, run, bend, stoop and the ability to lift or move fifty (50) pounds; use hands to finger, handle or operate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms and shift from minimal level of physical exertion to high stress/high level of physical exertion at a moment's notice.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Graduation from a senior high school or possession of the equivalent GED certificate.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Be a citizen of the United States. Be 21 years of age or older. Be of good moral fitness, as determined by a thorough background investigation. Be free of any conviction for any felony; any misdemeanor involving violent behavior; or unlawful use, possession, delivery, or manufacture of a controlled substance, narcotic or dangerous drug. Pass a written test and oral interview as prescribed by the Sheriff's Office. Be willing to work weekends, holidays, varying shifts and extra hours. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment may be a condition of employment. Must pass a general physical examination as required by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training and a comprehensive psychological examination. Possession of a Basic Certificate from the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training and Law Enforcement Data Systems (LEDS) certification within one year of hire date are required. Must possess and maintain a valid First Aid and CPR card including instruction of the operation of Automatic External Defibrillators. Additionally, meet the standards set forth in OAR 259-008-0010.

Bilingual Pay: Employees who are fluent in Spanish (and possibly Russian and/or American Sign Language) and use these skills while on duty will receive an additional 5% per month after passing a Standardized Language Fluency test administered by Linn County. Bilingual Pay is awarded at the discretion of the Sheriff.

• The Linn County Sheriff's Office provides an excellent health coverage plan for employee and eligible dependents, including medical, vision, prescription, dental, and optional life insurance, and long term disability.
• Potential of up to 17% in additional pay for certification, education, bi-lingual and special assignments.
• Linn County Sheriff's Office Deputies are enrolled in a retirement plan through the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS), with county-pickup, along with 1% county-pickup deferred compensation plan.
• Shift overtime is paid at 1.5 times the regular rate of pay (can be re-directed to employee's deferred compensation plan too). Corrections staff work a rolling four-days on/four-days off 12-hour shift schedule, and rotate days/nights every two months.
• Longevity pay of 2.5% on top of the base salary on 10th year anniversary, and an additional 2.5% on top of the base salary on 15th year anniversary and an additional 2.5% on top of base salary on 20th year anniversary.
• At the discretion of the Sheriff, and after successful testing of abilities, bilingual employees are eligible for 5% incentive pay on top of the base salary.
• All uniforms (including dry cleaning) and equipment provided. Yearly equipment allowance of $150.
• Paid vacation, personal and sick time.
• Ability to accrue up to 60 hours in Comp Time.

Minimum requirements for both Entry Level and Lateral Candidates: Must meet the following State Department of Public Safety Standards and Training requirements:

• United States Citizen within one year of employment.
• At least 21 years of age at the time of employment.
• Declared by a physician as able to perform the physical duties required by the occupation.
• Of good moral fitness, without legal conduct involving moral turpitude, dishonesty, fraud, deceit, misrepresentation, and conviction of drug and/or sex crimes.
• Must successfully complete all required training standards established by the Linn County Sheriff's Office and/or DPSST within one year of the date of hire.

Must meet the following Linn County Requirements:

• Must possess a current driver's license in the applicant's state of residence and an acceptable driving history. Linn County will obtain a copy of the driving record for all qualified applicants from Driver and Motor Vehicle Services.
• Possess knowledge of and experience in using a keyboard, mouse and computer (PC) equipment.
• Positions in this class are required to work rotating shifts, split shifts or other alternative work schedules and may be subject to call back.
• Finalists must pass psychological and medical/drug evaluations by a county appointed physician.

Background Check:

Finalists for this position will be subject to an extensive background investigation. Some issues that might cause an applicant to be withheld from further consideration include, but are not limited to the following:

• Felony convictions.
• Misdemeanor convictions for:
• Domestic violence (DV);
• Currently named as the Respondent in a Restraining Order;
• Crime of dishonesty; and/or,
• Crime that resulted in serious physical injury to another.
• Illegal manufacture, transport, or sale of a controlled substance.
• Any repeated convictions of an offense, which indicate disrespect for the law, a lack of good moral character or disposition towards violence and disorder.
• Discharge from employment, where such discharge indicates poor behavior and/or an inability adjusting to discipline.
• Any military discharge with a characterization other than honorable may require additional documentation. Linn County may request written authorization to request official military records from the appropriate branch of service to make a determination regarding fitness for employment.
• Persons convicted of a petty larceny.

Driving Disqualifiers:

Must be a competent and licensed operator of vehicles in the State of Oregon.

Drug Use Disqualifiers:

No arrests or convictions for any felony or any misdemeanor crimes involving the unlawful use, possession, delivery, or manufacturing of a controlled substance, narcotic or dangerous drug.

Additional Disqualifiers:

Must pass a thorough background investigation, psychological exam, medical exam including drug screen, and integrity interview that establishes strong moral character. Any conduct that could compromise the integrity of the employee, other employees, the Sheriff's Office or the County will be closely evaluated. Failure to read and follow directions may also disqualify candidates.

The individual shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of the individual or others in the workplace.

Tentative Hiring Process:

1. Review of NTN testing scores (Frontline National). Applicants must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the video exam. Applicants must pass all sections of the testing.
2. Successfully pass the full ORPAT Physical Abilities Test at or under 5 minutes 30 seconds (may submit a passing time proctored by another agency, if within one year of the closing date of this recruitment).
3. Review of NEOGOV Application.
4. Informal 10-15 minute face-to-face interview for eligible and invited applicants (followed by a short job tour).
5. Formal oral board face-to-face interview for eligible and invited applicants.
6. Pre-employment background investigation selected top candidates.
7. Conditional offer of employment extended to selected top candidates only. Hire contingent upon the successful completion of the following screening processes:

• Pre-employment psychological evaluation.
