Job Description

The Crime Technician conducts investigations, collects, processes and preserves evidence involved in a crime investigation and administers breath alcohol tests to determine whether a person is intoxicated.

Essential Functions

1 Administers the breath alcohol test to determine whether a person is intoxicated, assists with blood draws, and gathers other evidentiary samples; operates video equipment to video persons arrested for driving while intoxicated for court purposes.

2 Receives and processes information from the Crime Stoppers Hot Line according to established guidelines and procedures; completes criminal history checks and performs other crime research and investigation; intakes evidence and other pertinent property from officers, citizens, and other parties.

3 Fingerprints applicants, suspects, and victims; classifies and processes fingerprint cards; interprets and inputs fingerprint card information into the AFIS database computer files according to guidelines.

4 Collects, processes, and preserves physical evidence involved in a property crime; administers presumptive field testing for drug abuse and ensures all kits and testing equipment is available.

5 Responds to telephone inquiries in order to provide information pertaining to Police procedures; assists detectives/police officers in using city and county computers to access information.

6 Distributes arrest reports and all release change to magistrate and judge for approval.

7 Appears in county court for testimony related to the trials.

8 Manages, maintains, and purges inventory of evidence and items per relative codes, regulations, and standards; prepares items for final disposition ensures documentation and accurate management.

9 Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.

Knowledge And Skills

1 Knowledge of evidence and property management and inventory procedures.

2 Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws regarding evidence and crime data management.

3 Knowledge police testing procedures and fingerprinting.

4 Knowledge of warehousing practices and procedures.

5 Ability to administer alcohol testing and other related tests.

6 Ability to create records of all property within the guidelines established by State law and department rules and Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

7 Ability to accurately enter data on a computer.

8 Ability to operated radio and computer terminal.

9 Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

10 Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Education

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.

Experience

  • Three (3) years of law enforcement or investigative support experience with a municipal, county, state, or federal regulatory agency.

Equivalencies

  • An associate degree in a criminal justice, criminology, forensic science, social science, or physical science field plus one (1) year of the required experience will meet the education and experience requirements.
  • A bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a non-specified field plus one (1) year of the required experience will meet the education and experience requirements.
  • A bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a criminal justice, criminology, forensic science, social science, or physical science field will meet the education and experience requirements.

License

  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record.

Other Requirements

  • Must pass extensive background investigation.
  • Must pass polygraph and drug screening.
  • No FELONY convictions
  • No CLASS A or B MISDEMEANOR convictions.
  • No FAMILY VIOLENCE convictions.
  • Cannot currently be on deferred adjudication for any FELONY, CLASS A or B Misdemeanor.
  • Availability to work varying shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Some positions are subject to twenty-four/seven (24/7) emergency call-out.

Preferences

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Basic PC skills.
  • Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.

Salary Range

$43,752.79 - $47,158.79

The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
