Job summary

City of Meridian seeks an entry-level Crime Analyst to support law enforcement by collecting and analyzing Meridian crime data, identifying trends, and preparing findings for patrols and investigators.

Under an Analytical Services Lead, you will enter data, run queries, and contribute to reports, dashboards, and public safety bulletins using tools like ArcGIS Pro, DAM, and DAQS.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED, plus 2 years in a law enforcement setting.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, Adobe Acrobat Pro).
  • Knowledge of NIBRS, UCR, NCVS and Idaho crime statistics.

Responsibilities

  • Enter and analyze crime data for Meridian; identify trends and prepare related reports.
  • Create and run queries using DAM, DAQS, New World RMS or Web Crash Analysis Reporting System to extract data.
  • Maintain data accuracy, timeliness and security of entries.
  • Assist in preparing bulletins and statistics for officer safety and information dissemination.
  • Collaborate with departmental personnel to report findings and trends to investigators.

Job Summary

This is an entry level position in Crime Analysis with duties to include entering data, identifying and reporting on trends, patterns and/or new developments related to crime in Meridian for law enforcement activities and crime prevention purposes. Assistance is available from an Analytical Services Lead. Performs related work as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Collects, analyzes, evaluates and enters data related to crime in Meridian; Identifies crime patterns and/or trends and prepares related reports; Performs inferential statistical analysis of relevant historical and current crime data; Confers with departmental personnel to report on findings and trends; Create and run queries using essential tools such as Data Analysis and Mapping (DAM) in New World RMS or Data Analysis and Query System (DAQS) or Web Crash Analysis Reporting System to extract data from various databases or department records management systems, in order to present data and statistics. Process Adjudications and declines to update RMS and ITS. Conducts criminal background research for investigators gathering, analyzing, and evaluating data for pertinent use from criminal databases, jail or court systems, various social media websites, etc. Work within department to conduct research and prepare reports; Researches Leads-on-Line for stolen property by querying databases connecting property to victims and/or suspects. Utilize ArcGIS Pro. Creates, updates, and organizes information for publication that includes bulletins for officer safety, special events, informational notices with various graphic designs, etc. Prepares, maintains and updates reports into the appropriate format for various users; Reviews crime reports related criminal data, and information on a daily basis to assist in identifying or consolidating information for later scrutiny and/or use in crime statistics, bulletins, and articles. Assists in the development of a data base operation for the collection and analysis of crime data; Accurately process data regarding report’s updates and closers; Checks for accuracy, timeliness, and security of entries; Maintains dissemination logs for reports, maintenance, and updates; Any other duties or responsibilities as assigned.

Job Specifications

High school diploma or GED, plus 2 years working in a law enforcement setting, preferably in crime analysis, or educational emphasis in statistical analysis, plus education or practical experience in data collection and computer operations; Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Criminal Justice, or similar is preferred; Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, Adobe Acrobat Pro, etc) is required; Familiarity with the dynamics of the criminal justice system and law enforcement in particular; Familiarity with the National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS), the Uniform Crime Reporting System (UCR), the National Crime Victimization Survey, and the Idaho Crime Victimization Survey; Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Demonstrated and documented knowledge of computer operations related to word processing, spreadsheets, (SSPS) statistical program applications, analysis applications, knowledge of SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS); web pages, and computer-based presentations, Microsoft Office Programs i.e. Word, Excel, Visio, or, Access, Power-Point, etc; Ability to learn and use ArcGIS Pro; Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing; Ability to produce reports and document data in a demonstrative manner within mixed applications or in varied media in an understandable way for multiple customers, internal and external; Ability to demonstrate motivation, initiative, dependability, and cooperative interpersonal skills; Ability to work as a team player; Integrity, in the performance of assigned tasks; Ability to have strong attention to detail to check for coding on crime reports and correct errors to maintain reliability of statistics.

Licensing/Certification

Incumbent will obtain California Department of Justice Crime and Intelligence Analyst Certification, International Association of Crime Analysts Certification or International Association of Crime and Intelligence Analysis Certification. Must successfully pass the basic and advanced NCIC/ILETS certification tests within six (6) months of hire. Must participate and complete a formal NIBRS training session (in person or virtually) within one (1) year of hire.
