We are a small nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving trails in the backcountry of Southwest Oregon and Northwest California. Job Description
Title: Crew Member

Crew members commit to support the Club’s stewardship programs. They work a rigorous schedule on trail projects that run up to three weeks long. Crew members offer exceptional backcountry trail skills and can be counted on to produce results independently and in group settings.

They support Wilderness Corps Interns, staff teams, and volunteers.

Terms

Flexible terms up to 12 weeks with dates June 1 - September 30, 2025. May be required to take leave depending on term length. Pay is $15-17 per hour. Reports to Crew Leader and Program Managers.

Duties and Responsibilities

Field Work

  • Support daily operations that align with project goals
  • Work from remote backcountry locations on an array of trail projects
  • Perform daily work tasks including brushing, logging, and tread stabilization
  • Support staff and interns

Communication

  • Maintain professional attitude through interactions with SMC staff, interns, volunteers, and partners
  • Maintain strong communication systems and protocol
  • Strong communication in individual and group settings
  • Follow detailed instructions from supervisors

Required Skills and Experience

  • At least one season of backcountry trail experience
  • Must be comfortable working from backcountry hike-in locations with no amenities for up to three weeks
  • Crosscut "A" Certified, or equal proficiency
  • Ability to carry 50 pounds for 10 miles across rough terrain
  • Ability to spend long hours swinging tools, sawing logs, and clipping brush
  • Ability to learn new tools and tasks quickly
  • Use feedback to grow and improve
  • Punctuality and ability to work long and odd hours
  • Enthusiastic to work holidays and weekends
  • Ability to work independently in remote settings
  • Strong problem solving and brainstorming skills
  • First Aid/CPR
  • Able to learn navigation and map skills
