City of Winston-Salem, NC is seeking a grounds maintenance supervisor to manage a small crew and perform routine grounds upkeep for city facilities.
Under general supervision, you will coordinate tasks, monitor safety, and ensure timely completion, with a 7:00 am to 3:30 pm schedule.
This position requires basic education and experience in grounds maintenance, plus a valid driver's license, and emphasizes customer service and accurate reading of maps.
Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled work managing a crew in a variety of tasks relating to the maintenance of city owned grounds; performs related work as required.
Directs and works with a crew of 2 – 5 employees in performing routine grounds maintenance activities, such as weed eating, mowing, using a blower and edger, and litter collection. This position will work with the supervisor to help plan and accomplish work tasks and be able to redirect the work crew at a moment’s notice when directed. Current work schedule is 7:00 am until 3:30 pm.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the completion of the eleventh grade and experience in grounds maintenance work.
Must possess excellent customer service skills; demonstrate the ability to understand, follow and communicate oral and written instructions effectively; possess the ability to read and interpret a map to locate work locations; demonstrate a practical knowledge of the operation of grounds maintenance equipment such as mowers, weed trimmers, blowers and edgers; possess a basic mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform preventive maintenance and make basic repairs to equipment as needed; general knowledge of the methods and practices involved with grounds maintenance; ability to follow instructions and satisfactorily complete assigned tasks in a timely manner; ability to work long hours under sometimes adverse weather conditions.
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting, frequently requires standing, sitting, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires climbing or balancing and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
