Job description

Department of Utilities - Wastewater Division: Crew Leader I

The Department of Utilities is seeking qualified candidates for a Crew Leader I position in our Wastewater Division. This role involves leading a team of maintenance workers, equipment operators, and other staff engaged in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the wastewater system. The Crew Leader I will also investigate and resolve complaints and prepare maintenance reports for efficiency planning.

Essential Functions
  1. Directs and leads a crew involved in the installation, repair, cleaning, and maintenance of the wastewater collection system, including manholes, gravity mains, and force mains.
  2. Maintains records of time, equipment, and materials used for reporting purposes.
  3. Instructs crew members on proper safety standards and work expectations.
  4. Transports crew to work sites.
  5. Performs physical tasks such as climbing ladders and stairs, bending, pushing, pulling, stooping, lifting up to 75 lbs., standing for extended periods, and confined space entry.
  6. Operates a standard transmission vehicle.
  7. Possesses a valid driver's license; CDL may be required.
Qualifications

Requires knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or an equivalent education. Two years of supervisory experience in a maintenance role is highly preferred.

Work Details
  • Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with standby duty rotation.
  • Work Location: Combined Operations Center, 1316 Ballentine Blvd., Norfolk.

This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus.

Note: This position is designated as an 'Essential' position, which may require working extended hours, rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays in response to emergencies or severe weather.
