Job summary

The City of Stafford, TX is seeking a Public Works Construction/Maintenance worker to support street and sidewalk projects. Responsibilities include planning material needs, supervising field crews, and ensuring safety and quality during pavement and concrete work.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with planning by gathering materials, equipment and personnel needed to complete assignments.
  • Monitor work progress at sites and redirect crews to meet critical requirements.
  • Ensure procedures are followed and service quality is maintained.
  • Maintain and operate vehicles and equipment assigned to the team.
  • Perform inspections of contracted pavement work.
  • Lead crew in construction, demolition, and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, and related structures; assign tasks and enforce safety rules.
  • Provide training and support to crew members as needed.
  • Assist with concrete base preparation including forming, reinforcing, pouring, finishing, and cleanup.
  • Contribute to department success by performing other essential duties as assigned.

  • Subject to 24-hour recall; may be required to work overtime during emergencies.

Job description

The below statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists with planning by gathering materials, equipment and personnel needed to complete assignments
  • Responsible for monitoring work progress at sites, resolves in the field problems by redirecting work efforts to meet critical and/or necessary work requirements.
  • Ensure that proper procedures are followed, and service quality levels are maintained
  • Maintains and operates vehicles and a variety of equipment assigned to the team and consistent with Public Works activities
  • Perform inspections of contracted pavement work.
  • Leads crew performing construction, demolition, and maintenance activities for streets, sidewalks, driveways, alleys, drainage and asphalt repairs; prioritizes and assigns tasks; assures that all safety rules and regulations are observed on the job site. Cuts lumber, sets forms, and cuts, lays, and ties rebar using steel cutters and rebar ties.
  • Provides support to crew in the completion of their duties and responsibilities; provides functional and technical leadership and training as needed.
  • Assists with preparation of concrete base including; setting wood forms, positioning steel, measuring and pouring concrete, finishing concrete, removing wooden forms, backfilling and cleaning site.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the department by performing other essential duties as assigned
  • Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
  • Subject to 24-hour recall: The City reserves the right to require an employee in this position to work overtime including during emergency situations (defined as any natural or man-made disaster that may or may not necessitate the relocation of City personnel or citizens). In the event of an emergency and/or a required evacuation, the incumbent may be required to remain at work to provide needed services or perform essential duties for the benefit of the general public including services or duties different from those performed in the normal course and scope of the position.

  • Preparing reports, logs, and activity documentation;Ability to operate machinery and equipment;
  • Knowledge of concrete demolition, construction and repair techniques, including forming, reinforcing, pouring, finishing, blueprint interpretation, and the construction of street slabs, curbs, gutters, driveways, and related structures;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the public, and work cooperatively with diverse individuals and groups;
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING (Certification/Licensure):

The preferred way to obtain the minimum knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this position are listed below. The City reserves the right to allow substitutions in the event that a candidate or incumbent exceeds requirements in one area but may be deficient in another.

  • High School Diploma or GED, supplemented by college coursework and/or specialized training, and five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in assigned area of responsibility
  • Valid Texas Driver's License
  • Valid State of Texas Class "B" Commercial Driver's License, or must be obtained within six months of date in position.
