Job summary

City of Winston-Salem, NC seeks an intermediate skilled trades professional to support sewer maintenance and first response work. You will oversee crew tasks, operate sewer jets, vac trucks, and camera systems, and ensure safe work zones with proper protective gear.

Job description

Performs intermediate skilled trades work creating and maintaining a safe work zone, responding to sewer related issues, maintaining sewer mains and manholes, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Utilities Supervisor. Supervisory responsibilities are exercised over assigned staff.

  • Works on Sewer First Response Crew or Sewer Cleaning Crew.
  • Removes blockages from customer and City sewer lines; washes sewer pipes.
  • Assigns work and provides specific instruction to semi-skilled and unskilled workers performing a wide variety of tasks.
  • Operates sewer jets, vac trucks, camera systems, mowing tractor, and other vehicles and equipment daily.
  • Performs pre-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment; ensures truck is properly stocked.
  • Performs required preventive maintenance on equipment daily. (Greasing, emptying and cleaning filters, changes minor hoses, changes minor operating valves, and cleans nozzles. Mechanical aptitude is a must.)
  • Sets up and maintains safe work zones; ensures crew has appropriate protective equipment prior to entering work zone.
  • Enters work information from mobile devices and turns in written reports for various departments; fills out regulatory reports documenting incidents for the state including SSO reports.
  • May include pick and shovel work in digging and back filling trenches, laying pipe, repairing City clean-out stacks, operating pneumatic tools, loading and unloading materials, locating manholes, spreading straw and lime, turning soil on SSOs, or performing general utility maintenance and construction work.
  • Supervises and trains assigned staff for all manual work or simple semi-skilled tasks required to complete work.
  • Reviews work in progress and upon completion keeps all necessary records.

Thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and department policies, practices, and procedures; thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and departmental legal guides, best practices, ordinances, and laws; thorough knowledge of operating and simple maintenance of industry standard and department specific equipment; general knowledge of standard office and department specific software; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; ability to lead a crew of workers; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED and moderate experience (3 - 5 years) in construction or maintenance and writing reports and using computer systems, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience operating sewer jets, vac trucks and some experience with camera systems and mowing tractors is preferred.

Possession of a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial driver's license required.
