Job summary

Paramount in Los Angeles is seeking a Toy Designer to develop fun, quality toys across preschool, plush, action figures, dolls and more, collaborating with licensees to steward brands from concept through development, while solving cost and manufacturing challenges.

The candidate brings a BA/BS in Industrial/Toy Design, 1–2 years in toy manufacturing, and strong skills in Illustrator and Photoshop with quick sketching ability. A keen eye for color, trends and safety is essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design/Toy Design/Entertainment Design.
• Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience in the Toy Manufacturing industry.
• In-depth knowledge of manufacturing processes (injection molding, roto-molding, etc.) and plastic materials (polypropylene, ABS, etc.).
• In-depth knowledge of soft goods (plush and dolls), basic knowledge of pattern making, construction (darts, slits, piping, etc.) and fabrics (tricot, rickrack, velour, etc.).
• In-depth knowledge of games and sporting goods.
• Knowledge/awareness of manufacturing costs of a toy and cost reduction strategies.
• Proficiency in Illustrator and Photoshop, as well as an ability to do quick hand sketches.
• Ability to think creatively and conceptually, articulate his/her vision both verbally and visually, and problem solve.
• Knowledge of the toy, licensing and entertainment industry and current toy products.
• Ability to work in a pressured and constantly changing environment.
• Exemplary communication and presentation skills.
• Decisiveness, high-energy, and a sense of humor.

Responsibilities

• Oversee product development of Paramount brands (all categories) to ensure fun, quality toys from licensees.
• Review submissions from licensees and respond in a timely manner.
• Give comprehensible 3D comments to licensees and provide fully developed control drawings of characters or products when it is needed.
• Follow a product line through from concept to development to achieve manufacturer’s development milestones.
• Attend licensees’ partner weekly meetings.
• Problem solve aesthetic and manufacturing issues, especially cost reduction solutions.
• Assist in ensuring that products are consistent with market and consumer trends.
• Brainstorm new product concepts for existing and new Paramount properties.
• Implement creative strategy.
• Generate creative, innovative concepts based on the direction given by the design management team, including presentations of concepts to the design team, business and executive management.
• Schedule production ancillary meetings with EIC when needed.
• Assist in strategizing the future direction of established and new brands.
