Job description

Creative Digital Content Strategist

Advancement Project Education Fund Washington, District of Columbia, United States

About this position

Who We Are:

Situated at the forefront of the national stage in the racial justice movement, Advancement Project is a cutting-edge, no-holds-barred national organization dedicated to building local power in communities of color. Centered on a movement lawyering approach, defined as community-centered racial justice lawyering, Advancement Project supports power building in grassroots organizations working to eliminate oppressive structures in our laws and institutions and shift narratives towards transformative change. From ending the school-to-prison pipeline to the fight to expand the right to vote, from calling for a complete overhaul of how we view the police and carceral state, to fighting for immigrant justice, Advancement Project impacts real change from the ground up. Building on more than 25 years, we continue to evolve our strategic thinking and creativity to imagine a more just world in which people of color can thrive, be safe, and free – and we are excited to bring on new talent to forward our vision.

The Advancement Project’s track record of success includes:

Pioneering the movement to end the school-to-prison pipeline and winning significant victories in several school districts nationwide to reform disciplinary policies and practices and remove police from schools entirely, including building and nurturing a grassroots movement of parents and youth. This work led to federal guidance on racial discrimination in school discipline. Launching the National Police Free Schools Campaign with the Alliance for Education Justice, supporting local youth-led campaigns to end policing in their schools, and calling for national demands for change for safety in public schools. Serving as legal counsel in a key 2000 presidential election case in Florida, successfully challenging North Carolina’s 2013 voter suppression law, and being a founding member of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition that won the ballot initiative to strike down the state’s ban on voting for those with felony convictions. AP supported legislative efforts to pass the Virginia Voting Rights Act, the first state voting rights statute of its kind in the South. Supporting the Close the Workhouse Campaign in St. Louis, led by Action St, Louis, and securing an agreement with the city to close a jail and reinvest money into the community. Working with survivors of Hurricane Katrina from New Orleans to ensure their voices were heard in the process of reconstructing the city.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a creative, digitally fluent communicator to join our communications team. This position is an opportunity to build skills across strategic communications, from day-to-day content creation to earned media, while contributing to mission-driven work with real community impact.

Reporting to the Managing Director of Communications, this role is ideal for an emerging communications professional with a strong digital foundation, an eye for design, and a commitment to equity and justice. The right candidate brings creative energy, platform fluency, and the ability to translate complex legal issues into content that connects with Black and brown communities.

What You’ll Do:
Digital Content Creation and Social Media

Bring a creator's mindset to multimedia storytelling and help build a sustainable content production calendar. Pitch original video concepts that grow our audience and deepen engagement. Appear on camera as a credible, engaging voice for the organization's digital content, including story-driven social videos, behind-the-scenes content, and issue explainers for Instagram Reels and TikTok-style formats, bringing authenticity and energy to stories that connect with audiences. Shoot, edit, and produce short-form video content from concept through publishing, using tools such as CapCut, Instagram Edits, Adobe Premiere, or similar platforms with the ability to work quickly in response to news cycles and campaign moments. Adapt campaign information, research, news, and partner updates into clear and compelling digital stories. Conduct on-site interviews and capture photography at events to fuel the organization's ongoing content pipeline. Draft, schedule, and publish platform-specific content that builds awareness, drives engagement, and reflects the organization's voice and values. Monitor trends in relevant issue areas, including education justice, voting rights, racial equity, immigration, and community justice, and translate them into timely, relevant content. Coordinate the approvals process for campaign content across departments before scheduling and publishing. Cultivate and maintain relationships with content creators, digital journalists, and online influencers whose audiences align with the organization's mission and issue areas, serving as a dedicated point of contact for creator partnerships. Collect and help shape compelling stories from impacted community members and organizational allies, preparing them for both traditional media placement and social or digital amplification. Follow organizational standards for consent, attribution, accuracy, and ethical storytelling.

Visual Storytelling and Graphic Design

Conceptualize and produce graphics, infographics, and campaign visuals for Advancement Project’s website, emails, publications, and fundraising communications using platforms such as Canva, Figma, or Adobe Creative Suite. Support development of advocacy toolkits and materials for partners and stakeholders. Organize and maintain Advancement Project’s digital archive of photographs, video, audio, graphics, and related permissions and attribution information. Proactively identify and acquire evergreen assets and footage for future projects. Coordinate internal requests for visual and multimedia assets from program, development, and partners.
