Job summary

General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, CA seeks an experienced Crane Operator to operate diesel-electric cranes of various types to lift and move heavy objects within the shipyard. Successful candidates will follow ground and radio signals, perform routine maintenance, inspect equipment, and understand loading charts and ship nomenclature.

The role emphasizes safety, clear communication with team members, and efficient shipyard operations across shifts.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of mechanical principles and crane operation.
• Experience reading loading charts and ship nomenclature.
• Ability to communicate clearly with team members using radios.
• Willingness to perform routine maintenance and inspections.
• Strong safety mindset and adherence to procedures.

Responsibilities

• Operate diesel-electric cranes to lift, lower, and transfer loads in the shipyard.
• Set up machinery and ensure correct boom lengths for lifts.
• Rig machinery and materials in and out of ships.
• Record operational data in log books.
• Interpret load charts and assess load materials and landing areas.
• Inspect cranes for proper operation and address issues.
• Perform pre and post-job inspections and basic repairs.
• Train others in rigging and safe crane operations.
• Support other trades as needed.
