JOB SUMMARY

The Crane Operator Heavy1 responsible for operating a mobile or stationary crane to lift, move, position, and reposition loads while safely operating and transferring heavy objects from one location to another.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Operate specialized machinery such as telescope booms, lattice booms, all terrain, Rough Terrain, Crawlers, Industrial, Hydraulic Trucks, Conventional Trucks, Boom Trucks, and hydraulic cranes
  • Review and follow lift plan for proper loading/unloading of equipment/objects and selecting the appropriate crane confirmation to meet the lift requirements
  • Calculate load capacity, determine weight of items to be moved in relation to the maximum capacity of crane based on manufacturers specifications
  • Inspect clearances, overhead lines, and other possible obstructions to ensure there will be no accidents or damage to employees, buildings, loads, or equipment
  • Inspect and assess ground conditions to ensure that the crane can be set up safely
  • Properly set up per the manufacturer’s operators manual and company safety guidelines as required to perform job requirements
  • Inform supervision of any hazardous or dangerous conditions observed before or during crane operations
  • Receive direction from riggers and/or site supervision verbally or by hand signals to determine required load movement
  • Unload crane accessories from trailer(s) or support vehicle(s)
  • Assess/monitor weather conditions prior to and during operations
  • Properly shutdown/secure the crane when unattended
  • Understand and properly fill out job ticket for customer to accept responsibility for jobsite and billing
  • Cease crane operations if an unsafe situation or condition is present
  • Follow appropriate safety procedures and maintain logs of vehicle repair status and working hours per Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)
  • Perform routine maintenance, pre- and post-trip inspections along with daily and monthly equipment inspections inspecting cranes for defects and wear; performs necessary repairs or maintenance
  • Direct activities of truck drivers or helpers in setting up and knocking down crane equipment
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and properly barricades counterweight tail swing radius
  • Drive truck to worksites and unload truck
  • Complies with all applicable federal, state, and company safety laws, guidelines, and best practices
  • Ensure compliance of all safety procedures and policies while promoting company’s safety culture
  • Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED required
  • 15+ years of experience in related field required
  • Possess valid state license to operate heavy equipment required
  • Possess a current NCCCO or equivalent crane operator certification
  • Ability to pass pre-employment qualifications such as drug test, background check, and/or fit-for-duty test

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to work outdoors, exposed to heat and humidity, cold and rain, and around heavy traffic areas
  • Work long hours with moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another constantly perform repeating motions with feet, leg, wrists, hands and/or fingers to include walking, standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting, bending, gripping, climbing, depressing
  • Excellent depth perception and reaction time
  • Visual acuity to follow hand signals, maintain logs, and inspect and maintain machinery
  • Ability to wear required and appropriate PPE equipment
  • Occasionally exposed to extreme temperatures, fumes, or airborne particles
  • Exposure to moderate noise level in the workplace
  • Ability to operate job related tools
  • Ability to frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.
  • Work that includes moving and/or lifting objects up to 50 pounds, carry at least 30 pounds and up to 150 pounds with help
