Job summary

Bay Ltd. in Houston is seeking a seasoned Crane Operator Heavy1 to operate a mobile or stationary crane, lifting and moving loads while maintaining safety on the jobsite.

You will review lift plans, calculate load capacities, inspect clearances, and follow strict safety procedures. The role requires 15+ years of related experience, a valid state license, NCCCO certification, and the ability to pass pre-employment screenings.

Qualifications

  • Minimum high school diploma or GED.
  • 15+ years of experience in a related field.
  • Valid state license to operate heavy equipment.
  • Current NCCCO or equivalent crane operator certification.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment qualifications such as drug test, background check, and/or fit-for-duty test.

Responsibilities

  • Operate specialized machinery such as telescope booms, lattice booms, all terrain, Rough Terrain, Crawlers, Industrial, Hydraulic Trucks, Conventional Trucks, Boom Trucks, and hydraulic cranes.
  • Review and follow lift plan for proper loading/unloading of equipment and selecting the appropriate crane confirmation to meet the lift requirements.
  • Calculate load capacity, determine weight of items to be moved in relation to the maximum capacity of the crane based on manufacturer specifications.
  • Inspect clearances, overhead lines, and other possible obstructions to ensure there will be no accidents or damage to employees, buildings, loads, or equipment.
  • Inspect and assess ground conditions to ensure that the crane can be set up safely.
  • Set up per the manufacturer’s operator manual and company safety guidelines as required to perform job requirements.
  • Inform supervision of any hazardous or dangerous conditions observed before or during crane operations.
  • Receive direction from riggers and/or site supervision verbally or by hand signals to determine required load movement.
  • Unload crane accessories from trailer(s) or support vehicle(s).
  • Assess and monitor weather conditions prior to and during operations.
  • Properly shut down and secure the crane when unattended.
  • Understand and properly fill out job tickets for customer acceptance of jobsite and billing responsibility.
  • Cease crane operations if an unsafe situation or condition is present.
  • Follow appropriate safety procedures and maintain logs of vehicle repair status and working hours per FMCSA.
  • Perform routine maintenance, pre- and post-trip inspections along with daily and monthly equipment inspections, inspecting cranes for defects and wear and performing necessary repairs or maintenance.
  • Direct activities of truck drivers or helpers in setting up and knocking down crane equipment.
  • Wear personal protective equipment and properly barricade counterweight tail swing radius.
  • Drive truck to worksites and unload truck.
  • Comply with all applicable federal, state, and company safety laws, guidelines, and best practices.
  • Ensure compliance of all safety procedures and policies while promoting the company’s safety culture.
  • Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.

  • Excellent depth perception and reaction time.
  • Visual acuity to follow hand signals, maintain logs, and inspect and maintain machinery.
  • Ability to wear required and appropriate PPE equipment.
  • Occasional exposure to extreme temperatures, fumes, or airborne particles.
  • Exposure to moderate noise level in the workplace.
  • Ability to operate job‑related tools.
  • Ability to frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.
  • Work that includes moving and/or lifting objects up to 50 pounds, carrying at least 30 pounds and up to 150 pounds with help.
