Job Summary:
The Shipyard Crane Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating cranes within a shipyard environment to facilitate the movement of heavy materials, equipment, and components for ship construction, repair, and maintenance activities. THIS POSITION IS FOR 2nd SHIFT.
Job Responsibilities
- Operate electric, hydraulic, and friction cranes safely and efficiently.
- Lift, move, position, and place materials, supplies, and equipment within designated areas of the shipyard.
- Follow signal instructions from hook tender or other crane operators to ensure safety and accuracy.
- Control crane operations using pedals, levers, and buttons, following written, verbal, and signal instructions.
- Inspect crane machinery before use and identify any defects or maintenance needs.
- Adhere to safety procedures and regulations at all times.
- Maintain records of crane operations, including materials moved and hours worked.
- Read and understand crane load rating charts and diagrams, applying notes and warnings to ensure proper crane configuration.
- Identify site conditions that could affect crane operation and understand the manufacturer's operating manual.
- Coordinate with other shipyard personnel to optimize workflow.
- Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors about crane operations.
- Perform tasks requiring physical stamina and dexterity in various weather conditions.
- Demonstrate excellent hand-eye coordination and depth perception.
- Perform as a hook tender and operate heavy industrial vehicles as needed.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment as required.
Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent; vocational training preferred.
- 2-5 years of crane operation experience in a shipyard or similar setting.
- 3-5 years of rigging experience.
- Knowledge of crane operation principles, safety protocols, and ability to interpret instructions.
- Ability to pass a written exam post-training.
- Compliance with OSHA and company safety rules.
- Effective communication skills.
- Ability to understand danger zones and control personnel and equipment movement.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift heavy objects for extended periods.
- Manual dexterity and visual acuity for crane control and hazard identification.
- Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.
- Exposure to loud noises, vibrations, and hazardous materials; outdoor work in various weather conditions.
