Job summary

Job description

The Crane Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of hydraulic cranes in support of port and terminal operations. This role plays a key part in vessel loading and unloading, material handling, and yard operations. The Crane Operator operates independently on standard lifts while supporting more complex operations under the direction of senior operators or supervisors. The ideal candidate has hands‑on experience in crane operations, demonstrates strong safety awareness, and performs effectively in a fast‑paced maritime environment.

  • Operate hydraulic cranes to safely load, unload, and move cargo, bulk materials, and heavy equipment.
  • Execute lifting operations in accordance with load charts, lift procedures, and site‑specific requirements.
  • Conduct pre‑and post‑operation inspections to ensure cranes and associated equipment are in safe working condition.
  • Assist with rigging, signaling, and lift coordination in collaboration with riggers and ground personnel.
  • Work closely with crane operators, dock crews, and supervisors to complete lifting operations safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain accurate equipment logs, inspection records, and operational documentation.
  • Follow all OSHA, MSHA, and company safety policies, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Communicate clearly with supervisors and team members during all lifting and material handling operations.
  • Identify and report mechanical issues, equipment damage, or safety concerns promptly.
  • Assist with crane setup, relocation, and basic maintenance activities as needed.
  • Support general port and terminal operations when crane work is not required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support safe and efficient operations.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of 3+ years of experience operating hydraulic cranes or similar heavy equipment in port, construction, or industrial environments.
  • Working knowledge of crane operation principles, load charts, and signaling practices.
  • Ability to perform lifting operations safely in a dynamic, high‑traffic environment.
  • Strong commitment to safety and adherence to operational procedures.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Preferred Experience
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  • NCCCO (National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators) certification or equivalent.
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) or ability to obtain.
  • Experience in marine terminal or waterfront operations.
  • Familiarity with bulk material handling and vessel loading/offloading procedures.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, climb, and operate crane equipment for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks as needed.
  • Ability to work at heights and in varying outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind.
  • Required use of PPE (hard hat, safety vest, steel‑toe boots) in operational areas.
  • Field‑based role at marine terminals, construction sites, and industrial job locations.
  • Exposure to noise, vibration, dust, and heavy equipment operations.
  • Fast‑paced, safety‑sensitive environment requiring strong situational awareness and communication.
  • Work schedules may include shift work, extended hours, weekends, and overtime based on operational demands
