Job summary

Haynes International in Kokomo, IN seeks an experienced Machinist journeyman to lay out, set up and operate a wide range of machine tools within a maintenance shop.

The role requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and journeyman status or 6 years’ experience, plus strong safety focus, blueprint reading and math skills. Apprentices may be supervised and supported as part of a collaborative team.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent plus journeyman’s card or 6 years of documented machining experience.
• Strong math skills including fractions and unit conversions.
• Ability to read safety policies and follow maintenance procedures.
• Solid blueprint reading and interpretation of mechanical drawings.
• Experience with lathes, mills, grinders and related tooling; knowledge of cutting fluids.

Responsibilities

• Layout, plan, set up and operate a wide variety of machine tools in a maintenance shop.
• Design and/or work from complex designs to lay out, inspect, fabricate or repair parts.
• Operate material handling equipment such as cranes; may assist apprentices as needed.
• Maintain records and follow standard recordkeeping procedures.

Education Requirements Are

• High School Diploma or Equivalent and credentialed Machinist journeyman’s card or six (6) years’ documented experience in industrial/manufacturing machining.

Skills Requirements Are

• Mathematics - add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers and common fractions.
• Language - read and interpret the following documents: safety policies, follow all operating and maintenance procedures, follow all emergency procedures and various manuals, write routine reports and correspondence, and use communication skills with coworkers.
• Reasoning ability - ability to apply common sense and understanding; ability to carry out detailed but uninvolved written and oral instructions; and the ability to interact with coworkers through communications and acceptance of expectations and accountability.

• Experience working within an industrial maintenance, specifically manufacturing, environment.

Essential Experience Required

• High standard of integrity and professionalism;
• Strong working knowledge of job site safety as well as ability to complete a company specific safety orientation
• Solid knowledge and understanding of system operation, building plans and working drawings
• Hold a Machinist Journeyman’s card or 6 years of experience as a Machinist
• Knowledge of the use and care of tools, safety practices, blueprint reading as well as mathematics, mechanical drawings, etc.
• A comprehensive understanding of lathes, shapers, drill presses, planers, broaching, grinders, milling machines, and other tools.
• Knowledge of cutting coolants, lubricants and their uses.
• Ability to stand and walk for up to seventy-five percent of work time.
• Work with minimal supervision
• Self starter
• Experience working with equipment such as: boom lifts, scissor lifts, and forklifts

Essential Job Functions

• While working from within work orders, verbal instructions, complex blueprints, schematics and plans and sketches, the Machinist will lay out, plan work, setup and operate a wide variety of machine tools commonly used in a maintenance and machine shop.
• Designs, and/or works from complex designs to lay out, field test and fit, inspect, fabricate and/or repair a wide variety of complicated parts.
• Operates various material handling equipment such as floor controlled or overhead cranes, prime movers or work savers to perform work pertaining to the craft; may occasionally operate a fork truck or man lift in performing work related to the craft.
• Assists, directs and trains apprentices in the industrial maintenance and Machinist craft.
• Maintains records and follows recordkeeping processes.
