Job summary

City of Roanoke, Virginia seeks a Family Services Specialist to conduct Child Protective Services investigations and provide needed services to at-risk families and children. The CPS Investigator will assess allegations, prepare court affidavits, and testify as needed.

The role requires crisis response, court coordination, and flexible hours including after-hours beeper rotations. A Bachelor’s degree in Human Services (or related field) with relevant experience and a Virginia driver’s license

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Human Services or Bachelor's degree in any field with a minimum of two years of appropriate Human Services experience.
• Valid Virginia driver's license; if not, provide DMV driving record from previous state of residence.
• Strong ability to read and interpret laws, policies and regulations; effective written and oral communication.

Responsibilities

• Interviews clients to assess the nature and extent of needs.
• Identifies problems, counsels clients, and helps formulate service plans with supervisor.
• Maintains CPS case records and prepares written reports.
• Makes referrals to clinics, employment services, vocational rehabilitation, etc.
• Works with juvenile and domestic relations courts and circuit courts as needed.
• Provides protection and care to abused and neglected individuals in emergencies.
• Coordinates services with other agencies and foster care/adoption placements as required.
• Participates in after-hours beeper rotation and responds to emergencies.
