Job summary

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Animal Science Department invites applications for a Cow-Calf Technician II at ENREEC near Mead, NE. The role focuses on daily cattle care, data collection for research, and collaboration with ENREEC personnel.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED plus four years’ cattle operations experience.
• Associate degree in animal science, agriculture, or related field plus two years’ cattle operations experience; substitutions on a year-for-year basis.
• Artificial insemination certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire, estrus detection, and calving experience.
• Experience operating and maintaining farm equipment and vehicles.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to meet University driver eligibility requirements.

Responsibilities

• Be responsible for the daily feeding, health, and care of the cattle and carrying out a summer grazing plan.
• Assist in research trials, including weighing and collecting blood, hair, and other tissue samples, as well as bull data for the annual teaching herd bull sale.
• Operate tractors and trucks to feed cattle.
• Maintain equipment and facilities at the cow/calf unit.
• Perform record keeping during calving, breeding, and health treatment throughout the year.
• Perform artificial insemination and estrus detection of cows for breeding, thus AI certification is required.
• Communicate between local farmers and ranchers in the area, as well as all other ENREEC personnel.
• Supervise 2 to 4 student employees on a day-to-day basis.

Description of Work

The Animal Science Department’s Cow-Calf unit conducts research on genetics/genomics, reproductive physiology, and diseases that affect herd management practices (ie. Pinkeye, nutritional supplementation) in beef cattle with the goals of increasing herd fertility and longevity. This position is located at the Eastern Nebraska Research, Extension and Education Center ( ENREEC ) near Mead and Ithaca, NE. The Center is an easy 30-minute drive from either Lincoln or Omaha.

As a Cow-Calf Technician II, you will:
