Job summary

The Legal Aid Society invites applications for an Arraignment Paralegal I in its New York County office. You will support attorneys by gathering client information, accessing court records, and preparing reports.

The role covers court, office, and field settings across Manhattan, with weekend and late shifts as needed. Minimum requirements include a high school diploma or paralegal training, plus 2 years of relevant experience.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• At least 2 years of work experience.
• Advocacy for low-income communities preferred.
• One year of legal or related work experience.
• Second language fluency preferred.
• Some college-level work or paralegal training preferred.
• Work may occur in office, courtroom, and field settings.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills required.
• Proficient word processing and computer skills.
• Ability to work independently and in a team; multi-tasking capability.

Responsibilities

• Gather client information at court parts for attorneys.
• Interact with clients and families; relay case information.
• Access court records and support attorneys.
• Record case info using paper or electronic systems.
• Perform criminal history and conflicts checks per protocol.
• Prepare written and electronic case reports.
• Obtain and copy court and office files.
• Assemble court files and materials for attorneys.
• Serve as liaison between attorneys and clients.
• Scan and upload files into LAS databases.
