Job summary

Taft College seeks a Reader to provide vocal dictation of instructional materials and administer speed tests for court reporting students. This role supports both in-person and Zoom-based classroom environments, maintaining clear enunciation and consistent pacing across speeds.

A high school diploma is required, with experience in educational settings; bilingual Spanish/English is a plus, and the position involves classroom support and basic clerical tasks.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Proficiency with basic computer tools, including Zoom, email, and document programs.
• Strong reading and verbal communication skills with clear pronunciation and the appropriate speed based on course requirements.
• Six months+ full-time or one year+ part-time experience working with students in an educational setting.
• Demonstrate sensitivity to diverse backgrounds of staff and students.

Responsibilities

• Dictate instructional materials, practice drills, and speed tests for court reporting students at varying speeds.
• Use a stopwatch to ensure accurate timing during dictation sessions.
• Maintain consistent pacing and clarity appropriate to each assigned speed level.
• Foster a professional and supportive learning environment.
• Assist with basic classroom or instruction as it relates to course content.
• Assist students in the proper use of computers and other tools in the classroom or learning lab.
• Meet with professor at the beginning of the semester to set goals and objectives.
• Distribute course assignments and other handouts as needed.
• Participate in required training.
• Attend all scheduled activities.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
