Job Summary
Records and transcribes verbatim court proceedings or other hearings before the courts.
Responsibilities
- Stenographically record and transcribe all proceedings in real time.
- Ensure that court recording equipment operates correctly prior to proceedings.
- Prepare and proof transcriptions for distribution.
- File transcripts in civil and criminal proceedings with accurate documentation.
- Correspond with attorneys, court officers, and the public regarding transcript requests.
- Train and supervise court reporter interns.
- Order and maintain court reporting supplies.
- Maintain exhibits, inventory, catalog, and store evidence during hearings and trials.
- Log, copy, bind, and verify documentary evidence.
- Invoice and collect fees for recording and transcription services.
- Provide real‑time feeding to judges and counsel when required.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Completion of required apprentice and/or internship training in court reporting.
- Relevant coursework sufficient to obtain certification as a court reporter from a recognized licensing or accrediting agency.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience.
Specific License or Certification Required
- Professional license as a Certified Court Reporter (CCR) issued by the Board of Court Reporting of the Judicial Council of Georgia.
- Certification must be maintained throughout employment.
Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities
- Accurate reporting of stenographic court proceedings in real time at speeds 180–300+ words per minute.
- Translation of steno to English using computer-aided transcription software and peripheral hardware.
- Working knowledge of legal and medical terminology, correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and basic mathematics.
- Knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations governing court reporting and transcription activities, court policies, and procedures.
- Ability to use court reporting and transcription equipment and general office technologies.
- Compliance with the professional standards of the National Court Reporters Association.
- Effective communication with judges, coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
