Job summary

Ingham County is seeking a Law Clerk to assist the Circuit Court or Probate Court Judge. The role involves researching the law, advising the Court, and preparing opinions, orders, bench memoranda, and other documents.

You will act as a special deputy with the Sheriff’s Office, providing courtroom security and assisting with secure and orderly proceedings. The position requires 1–2 years of legal experience, a law degree or current law student status, and residency in Michigan.

Qualifications

• Must be a graduate of or a student at a reputable and qualified law school.
• 1–2 years of progressively responsible legal experience in a court or law firm setting is preferred.
• Resident of the State of Michigan.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle stress in a courtroom environment.
• Strong research, writing, and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

• Analyze court filings and conduct legal research; draft opinions, orders, bench memoranda, and recommendations.
• Assist a Judge with docket management, including cross-checking party names and case assignments.
• Provide security in the courtroom for judges, staff, juries, and the public; may assist in non-physical management of prisoners.
• Assist in facilitating jury trials, including setup and security of the jury room and related paperwork.
• Work with court technology to operate applications/devices (e.g., Zoom, Polycom) during proceedings.
• Prepare and maintain records, calendars, and law library; support in-chambers conferences and meetings.
