Job summary

Roanoke County, Virginia is seeking a Deputy Sheriff I to perform routine protective services in the jail and courthouse environment. Duties include processing inmates, conducting security checks, maintaining logs, transporting inmates, and assisting with court security. Requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid Virginia driver’s license, and U.S.

citizenship. Some experience in public or law enforcement-related work is preferred.

Qualifications

• General knowledge of civil and criminal law, court procedures and rules.
• Ability to cope with and handle interpersonal relationships; follow oral and written instructions; and to prepare records and reports.

Responsibilities

• Process inmates into custody; conduct security checks of inmates; maintain logs and supervise cleaning details.
• Transports inmates as required and attends to special inmate needs.
• Conduct routine security screening and court security duties; protect judges, court officials, witnesses and others in courtroom.
• Process entrants through security and supervise personnel leaving or entering the jail/courthouse.
