Job summary

Pima County seeks an on-site Spanish/English interpreter for court proceedings in the Superior, Juvenile, and Justice Courts. The role requires performing in consecutive and simultaneous modes, sight translations, and translating court documents between Spanish and English.

The ideal candidate has a bachelor’s degree, at least two years of professional interpreting experience, and ACICP Tier3/Tier4 credentials. A valid Arizona driver’s license is required at appointment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of continuous professional interpreting and translating experience in Spanish/English and English/Spanish in a municipal, general jurisdiction, or United States District Court.
  • ACICP Tier3 or Tier4 credential preferred.
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license at time of appointment.

Job Summary

Perform Spanish to English and English to Spanish interpretation in simultaneous, consecutive, and sight translation modes for judicial proceedings in Pima County Superior, Juvenile, and Justice Courts. This is an on‑site position requiring regular attendance.

Responsibilities
  • Interpret in consecutive and simultaneous modes in hearings and proceedings for Superior, Juvenile, and Justice Courts and other work situations as necessary.
  • Perform case‑related and law‑related research to prepare for in‑court interpreting.
  • Conduct sight translations of court documents.
  • Translate court orders, notices, petitions, and legal documents from Spanish to English and vice‑versa.
  • Proofread translated materials.
  • Assist in training of on‑call and new staff interpreters.
  • Maintain reliable, predictable, and timely attendance.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Willingness to be reassigned or travel between work sites by walking or driving.
  • React to physical confrontations quickly and effectively, as required.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of continuous professional interpreting and translating experience in Spanish/English and English/Spanish in a municipal, general jurisdiction, or United States District Court.
  • At least two years of legal, medical, escort, or conference interpreting experience or equivalent combination of experience, training, or education.
  • Tier 3 or Tier 4 credential from the Arizona Court Interpreter Credentialing Program (ACICP).
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license at the time of appointment.
  • Prior knowledge of interpreter ethics, courtroom procedures, and legal terminology.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree from a recognized interpretation or translation program (e.g., M.A. from Middlebury, B.A. from University of Arizona with a court interpreting certificate).
Licenses & Certifications
  • Tier 3 or Tier 4 credential from ACICP.
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license.
Physical & Sensory Requirements
  • Perform duties in court and office environments, lifting up to 20 lbs.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods.
  • Travel between court facilities by walking or driving.
  • Listen to multiple speakers, translate, and speak while ignoring distractions.
  • Maintain impartiality and professionalism, even with graphic or traumatic testimony.
  • High short‑term recall capacity to interpret long speech segments.
