Job summary

Jackson County seeks a County Counselor to initiate, prosecute, and defend civil litigation on behalf of the county, including board hearings and probate-related matters. The role requires advising county departments, HR, and staff on legal issues and employment law.

The ideal candidate holds a JD, 3–5 years of civil litigation experience, Missouri Bar admission (waivable), and passes a background check and drug screen. Salary is DOQ with strong benefits package.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university of law.
• Three to five years of civil litigation experience.
• Must be a member of the Missouri Bar Association or ability to waive in.
• Must submit to and pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.

Responsibilities

• Initiate, prosecute, and defend civil litigation on behalf of Jackson County, including the defense of civil claims, Merit Commission cases, Board of Equalization hearings, State Tax Commission hearings, and probate court matters.
• Provide guidance, legal advice, and assistance to County departments, directors, and staff regarding legal issues, human resources issues, personnel rules, and employment law.
