Job summary

The Botetourt County Board of Supervisors is seeking a County Attorney to serve as the chief legal counsel to the Board and to provide comprehensive legal services to the County Administrator, county departments, constitutional officers, boards, authorities, and commissions.

This role involves planning, directing, and managing the County’s legal affairs and overseeing litigation to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
• Licensed to practice law in Virginia or able to obtain licensure within a reasonable timeframe.
• Extensive experience in local government, administrative law, litigation, and legal advisory services.
• Valid Virginia driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

• Provide written and oral legal opinions to County officials and staff upon request.
• Draft, review, and revise ordinances, resolutions, contracts, deeds, easements, agreements, and other legal documents.
• Interpret and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws; advise departments on administrative, regulatory matters.
• Manage, evaluate, and direct litigation involving the County; oversee outside counsel when appropriate.
• Advise on land use, zoning, real estate transactions, public procurement, taxation, contracts, and employment law.
• Respond to FOIA requests; train staff, boards, and commissions on FOIA and conflict of interests requirements.
• Lead, supervise, and develop a legal office; manage workflow, budget, and professional development.
