Job summary

Montgomery Public Schools is seeking a qualified School Counselor to support students through guidance, counseling, and educational planning. This Exempt position reports to the Principal and follows the district salary schedule for 207 days.

Responsibilities include developing a local school guidance plan, analyzing student needs, referrals, and supporting placement and follow-up services for students. Requires Master’s degree and Alabama teaching certificate in the relevant field.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree from an accredited educational institution.
• Valid Alabama Teacher’s Certificate endorsed in the relevant subject area.
• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable.
• Must complete a criminal background check through the Alabama State Department of Education at your own expense.

Responsibilities

• Develops, implements, and evaluates an annual local school guidance and counseling plan.
• Collects, organizes, and analyzes information about individuals for vocational and educational planning.
• Consults with parents/guardians, teachers, and staff about the special needs of students and makes appropriate referrals.
• Administers tests, and analyzes and interprets test results to provide information about educational, vocational, and personal/social needs.
• Assists with placement and follow-up services for students.
• Assists students in building self-esteem and developing decision-making, problem solving, and positive human relations skills.
• Develops personal professional growth plan and demonstrates professional ethics and leadership.
• Assists students in selecting programs of study to enhance career planning.
• Maintains comprehensive records and reports.
• Exhibits positive human relations skills.
• Demonstrates proficiency in written and oral communications.
• Complies with local, state, and federal policies, regulations, and laws affecting area of responsibility as well as the American School Counselor Association Code of Ethics.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.

2. Collects, organizes, and analyzes information about individuals through records, tests, interviews, and professional sources, to appraise their interests, aptitudes, abilities, and personality characteristics, for vocational and educational planning.
3. Consults with parents/guardians, teachers, and staff about the special needs of students and makes appropriate referrals.
4. Administers tests, and analyzes and interprets test results to provide information about educational, vocational, and personal/social needs.
5. Assists with placement and follow-up services for students.
6. Assists students in building self-esteem and developing decision‑making, problem solving, and positive human relations skills.

16. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
17. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
18. Ability to define problems, collect and analyze data to establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
19. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
