Job summary

Phoenix Rescue Mission seeks a compassionate clinical counselor to provide individual and group therapy within a faith-based recovery environment. A Master’s degree in a behavioral health field and an active AZ associate license are required, with at least one year of counseling experience and expertise in trauma-informed care and substance use treatment.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a behavioral health field.
  • Active associate license with the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners (LAC, LAMFT, LMSW, LASAC, or equivalent).
  • Minimum of one year of counseling experience.
  • Experience in substance use treatment, trauma-informed care, or residential behavioral health.
  • Ability to document using an EHR and maintain confidentiality and regulatory standards.
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, organization, and time management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional individual counseling with increasing autonomy.
  • Conduct biopsychosocial evaluations, risk assessments, and diagnostic impressions under supervision.
  • Manage a diverse caseload including co-occurring disorders and complex trauma histories.
  • Develop and monitor clinically sound treatment plans with measurable goals.
  • Provide crisis responses and assist with crisis planning and safety monitoring.
  • Document all services in line with policies and ethical standards.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and program leadership for integrated care.
  • Support staff by modeling effective therapeutic communication and clinical reasoning.
  • Engage in supervision and continuing education while working toward licensure.
  • Participate in devotions, prayers, or faith-based activities that reflect a Christian witness.

YOUR TOP RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide professional individual counseling, evidence-based therapeutic interventions, and group facilitation services with increasing autonomy.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments, including biopsychosocial evaluations, risk assessments, and diagnostic impressions under supervision.
  • Manage a diverse caseload, including clients with co-occurring disorders, complex trauma histories, and higher levels of clinical need.
  • Develop and maintain clinically sound treatment plans with measurable goals and monitor client progress.
  • Provide timely and appropriate crisis responses and assist with crisis planning, coordinated responses, and safety monitoring.
  • Document all services in compliance with PRM policies, licensing requirements, and ethical standards.
  • Communicate with multidisciplinary teams and program leadership to coordinate integrated care and provide clinical recommendations.
  • Serve as a clinical resource to Counselor I staff and Recovery Coaches by modeling effective therapeutic communication and sound clinical reasoning.
  • Participate in clinical supervision, required training, and continuing education while progressing toward independent licensure.
  • You will lead or participate in devotions, prayers, or other organization activities that promote a credible Christian witness and lifestyle.
WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE
  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Psychology, or a related behavioral health field.
  • Active associate license with the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners (LAC, LAMFT, LMSW, LASAC, or equivalent).
  • Minimum of one year of counseling experience, preferably in substance use treatment, trauma-informed care, or residential behavioral health.
  • Strong skills in clinical assessment, treatment planning, individual and group counseling, evidence-based interventions, crisis intervention, and risk assessment.
  • Knowledge of substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health conditions, trauma-informed care, and holistic recovery principles.
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, organization, and time management skills with the ability to manage complex clinical needs.
  • Ability to maintain accurate clinical documentation, utilize electronic health record (EHR) systems, and uphold confidentiality, ethical, and regulatory standards.
  • Current AZ Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card with no restrictions, or eligibility to obtain with no restrictions.
  • A solid and credible Christian witness and lifestyle that exemplifies Christ in character and actions.
