Job summary

SMA Healthcare in Ocala, FL is seeking a Behavioral Support Worker to monitor clients, provide counseling support, and assist with admissions and daily activities in a residential/detox setting.

The role requires a high school diploma, 2 years of human services experience, and preferred CBHT or CAC training. A valid FL driver’s license and background screening are required. Position involves shift work with potential overtime.

Qualifications

  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related human services experience.
  • Certification as a CBHT, or an Associates Degree in a human services discipline preferred.
  • Certification as an addictions counselor (CAC), or training in MRT is preferred.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license and acceptable driving record required.
  • Background screening required before start of employment and during employment as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor behavior and activities of clients; report health/safety concerns.
  • Serve as a positive role model; use behavior modification techniques.
  • Process admissions and discharges for residential/detox clients; orient clients to facility.
  • Document service activity notes daily and maintain shift and companion logs.
  • Facilitate group and individual counseling sessions; promote treatment goals.
  • Ensure safety with discipline and aggression control techniques when needed.
  • Perform office duties and communicate with public, police, and hospitals.
  • Participate in meetings and collaborate with the multidisciplinary team.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Responsible for monitoring the behavior andactivities of each client; reports any concerns regarding the health,safety, or well-being of a client to the appropriate authority.
  • Serves as a positive role model; utilizesapproved behavior modification techniques; provides positivereinforcement and support to clients.
  • Processes admissions and discharges forresidential and detox clients; orients the client to the facility;explains rules, policies and procedures.
  • Completes required program documentation and reportsas required.
  • Facilitates group and individual counselingsessions.
  • Documents service activity notes daily onclients' activities, behavior patterns, changes in behavior patterns,medications.
  • Reviews and documents in shift report logs,shift logs, companion files etc.
  • Obtains required program information fromclients; inventories client valuables.
  • Conducts security/safety checks; monitorsvisitors/clients for contraband; conducts searches; removes dangerousitems; performs and/or assists with restraints. Collects urinespecimens; delivers to laboratory if required; utilizes infectioncontrol procedures.
  • Participates in meetings as required;converses with staff on client's progress.
  • Performs general office duties; answerstelephones; communicates with the public, police, DCF, hospitals etc;files, types, copies.
  • Attends training/in-services as required.
  • Controls verbally and/or physically abusiveand aggressive clients and performs aggression control techniques.
  • Ensures compliance with DCF Licensurestandards and security safeguards.
  • Assist clients with activities of dailyliving, including, but not limited to, meal preparation, behavioralobservations, transportation, and recreational activities.
  • Provides a safe and therapeutic environment;interacting in a warm compassionate manner; de-escalating clients;promoting/assisting client achievement of treatment plan goals andobjectives.
  • As a member of the multidisciplinary team,works in close conjunction with all team members, and othercollaborating agencies to ensure the best possible client outcomes.
  • Coordinates with outside services asappropriate to ensure that clients' needs are addressed.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and/or Experience: Possession of a high schooldiploma or equivalent and 2 years of related human services experiencerequired. Certification as a CBHT, oran Associates Degree in a human services discipline preferred. Certification as an addictions counselor(CAC), or training in moral reconation therapy (MRT) is preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of the human services field and theapplication of basic client care skills.
  • Ability to handle verbally and/or physically abusive andaggressive clients and utilize aggression control techniques to ensurethe safety and well-being of the client, other clients, and employees inthe unit.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with suicidal, mentally,emotionally, and/or psychologically disturbed clients in person and overthe telephone.
  • Ability to defuse potentially dangerous situations, and remaincalm in an emergency.
  • Ability to facilitate Counseling groups in an appropriate,therapeutic manner.

Necessary Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Florida driver's license, acceptable drivingrecord, and proof of personal automobile insurance if required to drive an SMAvehicle and/or use a personal vehicle for SMA business. Complete State ofFlorida mandatory background screening prior to start of employment. Complete SMA required training during thefirst six (6) months of employment and updated if required.

Physical: Mobility and ability to bend andreach during an 8-12 hour day. Able to lift minimum 10 pounds. Visual andauditory acuity sufficient to evaluate, intervene, treat, and record clienthealth care needs. Fine motor skills for legible and accurate charting, dailycorrespondence and presentation, either manually or orally. Work enduranceability to work 8-12 hour shifts with a meal break, as possible. Routine8-12hour shifts. Hours and days off may vary. Extra hours may berequired. Work assignment locations may vary.
