Job summary

SMA Healthcare seeks a Behavioral Health Technician to monitor clients, model positive behavior, and support daily life skills.

You will handle admissions, orient clients to the facility, document activities, and ensure compliance with state and program standards. Candidates should have a high school diploma and basic human services experience; certification is preferred. A Florida driver’s license and background screening are required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; 6 months related experience preferred.
• Behavioral Health Technician certification preferred.
• Additional program guidelines may require more education/experience.

Responsibilities

• Monitor the behavior and activities of each client; report health, safety or well-being concerns to appropriate authority.
• Serve as a positive role model; use approved behavior modification techniques and provide positive reinforcement.
• Conduct basic life skills activities.
• Process admissions and discharges; orient clients to the facility and explain rules, policies and procedures.
• Complete required program documentation and reports daily, weekly, monthly.
• Document clients' activities, behavior patterns and changes.
• Ensure clients adhere to established schedule and routine.
• Obtain program information; inventory client valuables; transport clients to other agencies as needed.
• Conduct security and safety checks; monitor visitors/clients for contraband; perform searches and restraints if required.
• Perform general office/public contact duties and attend required meetings.

Essential Job Functions:

• Performs general office and public contact duties,such as: answering telephones, using program radios, greeting visitors,communicating with the public, police, DCF, hospitals etc.
• Participates in meetings as required; converses with staff on client's progress or lack of progress.
• Performs general cleaning responsibilities when needed.
• Attends training /in-services as required.
• Utilizes approved de-escalation techniques when necessary.
• Transports clients to other agencies, hospitals, homes, community activities, AA meetings etc.
• Ensures compliance with CARF, AHCA, DCF, DJJ and/or DOC standards and security safeguards.
• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and/or Experience: Possessionof a high school diploma or equivalent. Six months of related humanservices experience preferred. Preference will be given to those who arecertified as Behavioral Health Technicians. Additional educationand/or experience may be required as per specific program guidelines.

Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities:

• Some knowledge of the human services field and the application of basic client care skills.
• Ability to utilize behavior management techniques and serve as a role model.
• Abilityto handle verbally and/or physically abusive and aggressive clients andutilize aggression control techniques to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the client, other clients, and employees in the unit.
• Abilityto communicate effectively with suicidal, mentally, emotionally, and/orpsychologically disturbed clients in person and over the telephone.
• Ability to defuse potentially dangerous situations, and remain calm in an emergency.
• Abilityto understand and implement The Mandt System in order to assist clientswho are in crisis. This may include the physical ability to restrain aclient, or assist with the restraint of a client.
• Ability to prepare and maintain written documentation.

Necessary Special Requirements: Possessionof a valid Florida driver's license, acceptable driving record, andproof of personal automobile insurance if required to drive an SMAvehicle and/or use a personal vehicle for SMA business. Complete Stateof Florida mandatory background screening prior to start of employment.Complete SMA required training during the first six (6) months ofemployment and updated if required.

Physical: Mobilityand ability to bend and reach during an 8-12 hour day. Able to liftminimum 10 pounds. Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to evaluate,intervene, treat, and record client health care needs. Fine motor skillsfor legible and accurate charting, daily correspondence andpresentation, either manually or orally. Work endurance ability to work8-12 hour shifts with a meal break, as possible. Routine 8-12 hourshifts. Hours and days off may vary. Extra hours may be required. Workassignment locations may vary.
