Job summary

Lyft is seeking an experienced attorney to lead a broad litigation and regulatory portfolio in a fast-paced environment. You will counsel internal teams, manage investigations, and steer strategies across consumer, regulatory, and government matters.

You will report to a Director on the Litigation team and work closely with Compliance, Public Policy, Communications, Product, and other departments to minimize legal risk while enabling business growth.

Qualifications

• J.D. degree from a top-tier law school and active state bar membership.
• 5+ years civil litigation experience at a mid-to-large firm or regulatory agency; in-house experience preferred.
• Experience with regulatory disputes, government investigations, and complex or consumer class actions is a plus.
• Excellent problem-solving, strategic thinking, judgment, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Handle a wide range of litigation matters, pre-litigation dispute resolution, internal counseling, and other disputes with emphasis on consumer litigation and regulatory matters.
• Proactively manage discovery, motions, witness preparation, settlements, and appellate strategies.
• Provide strategic legal advice to cross-functional teams on litigation and regulatory issues.
• Manage outside counsel, including staffing, budgeting, and alignment with the legal strategy.

Job description

Lyft is seeking a sharp, dynamic, and self-motivated attorney with at least 5 years litigation and counseling experience to achieve Lyft’s business goals at the intersection of law, policy, and technology. You’ll serve as a trusted advisor to multiple internal business partners, and your work to minimize legal risk to the Company will be core to the success of the organization. The successful candidate will be ethical, entrepreneurial and resourceful, skilled at building strong relationships, and comfortable working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. You will report directly to a Director on the Litigation team.

Responsibilities:

• Primary responsibility — meaning, hands‑on work, not just supervising outside counsel — for a wide variety of litigation matters, pre‑litigation dispute resolution, internal counseling, and other legal disputes, with an emphasis on consumer litigation, regulatory disputes, government investigations, and competition.
• Proactively approach all aspects of litigation, including discovery, motion practice, witness preparation, settlement negotiations, and trial and appellate strategies.
• Work closely with internal business partners to provide strategic and proactive legal advice on litigation and regulatory matters, including but not limited to understanding, interpreting, and applying current law and regulations to Lyft’s current and prospective products and services.
• Provide strategic recommendations to a broad range of cross‑functional teams addressing regulatory and other matters.
• Provide legal guidance to departments such as Compliance, Public Policy, Communications, Customer Care, Product, Marketplace, and Lyft Urban Solutions to help craft solutions to the novel legal challenges Lyft faces every day.
• Manage outside counsel, including tactical guidance, staffing, case management, budgeting, and alignment with Lyft’s broader legal strategy.

Experience:

• J.D. degree from a top‑tier law school and active membership in at least one state bar.
• 5+ years civil litigation experience at a mid to large size law firm and/or a regulatory agency. Strong preference is given to candidates with prior in‑house experience.
• Prior experience with regulatory disputes and government investigations, competition matters, and complex or consumer class actions is preferred.
• Excellent problem‑solving capabilities, strategic thinking, judgment, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Both detail oriented and able to see the big picture.
• Ability to operate autonomously while being a team player who brings a positive attitude to the workplace and is willing to jump on any project, big or small.
• Executive presence and ability to communicate legal risks and recommendations to senior leaders.
• Demonstrated ability to make decisions and influence through excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to think quickly on your feet and simultaneously manage workloads, multiple client demands and shifting priorities.
• Be a resourceful self‑starter and have a passion for results. Embody Lyft’s culture, and operate with high standards and ethics
• An understanding of the multi‑modal transportation and ridesharing industries, as well as the sharing economy in general.

The expected base pay range for this position in the Washington, DC area is $161,920 - $202,400 not inclusive of potential equity offering, bonus or benefits. Salary ranges are dependent on a variety of factors, including qualifications, experience and geographic location.
