Job summary

The University of New Mexico is seeking a Costume Technician to assist in creating, constructing, altering, and maintaining costumes for Theatre and Dance productions. Duties include sewing, patterning, alterations, repairs, fittings, and other costume tasks aligned with experience and skill.

You will collaborate with the Shop Supervisor to keep the Costume Shop organized and functional for daily operations.

Qualifications

  • Previous sewing or wardrobe experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of sewing machines, sergers and hand sewing basics.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality workmanship.
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff and students.

Responsibilities

  • Create, construct, alter and maintain costumes for theatre productions.
  • Sew, pattern, alter, repair and fit costumes as assigned.
  • Support daily Costume Shop operations with the Shop Supervisor.
  • Organize materials, maintain a clean, safe workspace and manage inventory.

Position Summary

The Costume Technician will assist in the creation, construction, alteration, and maintenance of costumes for the Theatre and Dance Department, with responsibilities assigned according to their level of experience and technical skill. Duties may include sewing, patterning, alterations, repairs, fittings, and other costume-related tasks necessary for productions.

The Costume Technician will also work closely with the Shop Supervisor to support the daily operations and maintenance of the Costume Shop. This may include organizing materials and equipment, maintaining a clean and safe workspace, assisting with inventory, and ensuring that the shop remains functional and prepared to meet the needs of Theatre and Dance productions.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience with sewing, costume construction, alterations, or wardrobe work.
  • Basic knowledge of sewing machines, sergers, hand sewing, and other costume shop equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain quality workmanship.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, student designers, and other student employees.
