Job summary

Houston Grand Opera in Houston, TX seeks a Senior Costume Shop Supervisor to manage daily operations, oversee construction, alterations, and staff during productions. You will ensure builds meet artistic standards, stay on schedule and within budget, and coordinate with designers and other departments.

The role requires a Bachelor's degree in costume tech or theatre production and 3–5 years supervisory experience in a costume shop, with strong organizational and safety compliance skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in costume tech or theatre production.
  • 3–5 years of professional costume shop experience with supervisory responsibilities.
  • Expertise in construction, tailoring, draping, patterning, alterations and fitting.
  • Experience estimating labor hours, materials and timelines within budgets.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees daily operations and labor of the costume shop.
  • Acts as Safety Coordinator for the Costume Shop; ensures OSHA compliance.
  • Oversees staff, freelance crew, and artisans through all production phases.
  • Tracks fabrics, trims, notions, stock and materials within budgets.
  • Maintains costume shop equipment, repairs, and maintenance schedules.
  • Assist with workflow priorities to meet fitting and production deadlines.
  • Participate in hiring costume shop crew with Costume Director.
  • Assist with HR docs, time sheets, PTO and related tasks.
  • Coordinates safety training and safe use of equipment.
