Mary Moody Northen Theatre/Department of Performing Arts

St. Edward's University of Austin, Texas invites applications for the position of Costume Shop Manager. The Costume Shop Manager is a key member of the Mary Moody Northen Theatre production team. This role is responsible for, facilitates, and oversees the daily shop operations and the production of all costumes and hair/makeup elements for the MMNT/Department of Performing Arts' Costume Shop. This includes leading and supervising the production process, construction, procurement, and the realization of the costume and wig/makeup designs for the Mary Moody Northen Theatre's season of four productions and special events. The Costume Shop Manager works closely with the design faculty to establish the needs of theater students and design classes. There are potential opportunities for this role to teach a course and/or serve as a production costume designer.

Mary Moody Northen Theatre (MMNT) is the producing arm of the St. Edward's University Department of Performing Arts. MMNT operates under a University-Resident Theatre Agreement (U/RTA) with Actors' Equity Association, the union of professional actors and stage managers. MMNT is a member of the Theatre Communications Group. This position will begin July 1, 2025.

Qualifications for this position include:

  • BFA or BA in costume design/technology or related field with a minimum of three years of professional experience managing a costume shop or related experience in theatrical costume design/technology.
  • Knowledge of costume history, construction techniques, and fabric required.
  • Experience in supervising costume construction and crafts.
  • Professional experience in costume technology: cutting, pattern making, draping, stitching, and tailoring.
  • Ability to work quickly, accurately, and with attention to detail.
  • Flexible, focused, and well-organized team leader.
  • Knowledge of Actors' Equity Association preferred.
  • Previous management and supervisory experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to comply with workplace guidelines and policies, including safety and Title IX protocols.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • This is an in-person position and requires working outside normal hours.

Essential Functions include:

  • Collaborate with the MMNT Resident Director, staff, design faculty, and guest designers on all costume production elements, planning, and execution, ensuring timely delivery.
  • Establish and follow production calendars, shop schedules, protocols, and procedures.
  • Supervise and mentor students in shop processes and projects.
  • Manage and supervise costume builds from design to completion, including crafts, painting, dyeing, and millinery.
  • Assign and supervise construction tasks to staff and students.
  • Work with hair and makeup guest designers from sketch to finished product.
  • Attend rehearsals, provide notes, and train students in costume and wardrobe roles.
  • Coordinate dress rehearsals, performances, and strike.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and ensure quality standards.
  • Provide costumes for rehearsals as needed.
  • Schedule fittings and costume-related appointments.

Administrative duties include:

  • Report to the Managing Director regarding budget and operations.
  • Track expenses and ensure budget compliance.
  • Hire, train, and supervise staff and over-hire students.
  • Communicate effectively with the production team and designers.
  • Procure resources and maintain costume inventory.
  • Create a positive work environment and mentor students.
  • Attend meetings and oversee shop maintenance and supplies.
  • Manage costume stock and rental requests.
  • Maintain production records and paperwork.
  • Drive university vehicles when necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
