Job description

As we expand our Costume Shop leadership team, Hale Centre Theatre is seeking a dedicated and experienced Costume Build Supervisor to join our creative and dynamic Costume Department. This new leadership role will support our growing production needs and contribute to the continued excellence of our costume builds. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, collaborative, and passionate about theatrical costume production. This position is instrumental in ensuring our costumes meet the artistic, safety, and quality standards that define Hale Centre Theatre’s exceptional productions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Daily Supervision: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Costume Shop, including scheduling and procurement of materials.
  • Project Coordination: Collaborate with the Head of Costume and Wardrobe to execute each production on time and within budget.
  • Assignment Management: Manage and maintain the project software used for costume build assignments.
  • Team Scheduling: Work with Shop Management to coordinate and set schedules for Costume Shop Employees.
  • Information Transfer: Meet regularly with Patterners/Tailors and Show Assistants to assign projects to Stitchers and ensure effective communication across the team.
  • Inventory Management: Maintain an organized inventory of materials and supplies to ensure readiness for all upcoming projects.
  • Equipment Oversight: Ensure all Costume Shop equipment is maintained and in proper working order.
  • Quality Control: Guarantee all costumes meet Hale Centre Theatre’s standards for quality and safety; perform or assign repairs and alterations as needed.
  • Hiring & Onboarding: Participate in the hiring process and ensure all onboarding protocols for new Costume Shop Employees are completed.
  • Warehouse Transfers: Assist in the coordination and return of costumes and over-pull items back to the warehouse.
  • Training: Conduct training for new Stitchers and monitor their adherence to HCT standards and procedures.
  • Professional Development: Lead team-building and training opportunities such as “Lunch and Learn” sessions and HCT Value workshops as directed.
  • Measurement Days: Supervise costume needs for Super Saturdays, measurement days, and scheduled fittings.
  • Safety Compliance: Uphold and enforce all safety protocols in accordance with Hale Centre Theatre guidelines.
  • Design Integrity: Support the creative vision by helping maintain the integrity of each costume design.
  • Professionalism: Maintain a respectful and professional demeanor when working with colleagues, designers, performers, and other departments.
Qualifications:
  • Previous supervisory experience in a professional costume shop or similar environment preferred.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced setting.
  • Proficient in costume construction techniques and terminology.
  • Familiarity with costume project management software is a plus.
  • A collaborative spirit and commitment to excellence in theatrical production.
