To achieve HDMA business targets, it is critically important to determine whether a given part/system design is cost-driven and provides reasonable value for the money. The Cost Planning Chief Engineer is the recognized Technical Leader for the Design and Performance Category. All cost-related issues requiring adjudication or decision-making come to him as the final authority. They are well aware of emerging technologies in their field and demonstrate technical competence, breadth of knowledge, and leadership in deciding direction and method to address matters relating to Cost. They have the experience to recognize and quantify a proposal’s effect on cross-functional areas and interpret the downstream effects on the overall business.
Possesses thorough knowledge of standard and novel manufacturing processes used to produce parts in their field. Through their own experience, can recognize whether a part is efficiently crafted for ease of manufacture and optimized for cost. Can also identify innovation points or enabling technologies that make for an excellent design. Conversely, can identify areas where improvement opportunities exist and how to address them. They stay abreast of latest developments and technologies trending in their field. Has a thorough understanding of regulations, market competitiveness, cost, and weight, and considers these factors in decision-making.
Evaluates the reasonableness of cost targets and VA/VE proposals by carefully examining the logic and assumptions used. Can judge the feasibility of proposals, including the implementation path (e.g., DR-theme, new supplier QAV, factory investment) and timing. Ranks and judges cost-related items and issues approvals or issues instructions as needed.
Attends benchmarking workshops on-site, providing background, context, and leadership in discussions with vendors. Consults regularly with counterparts in Japan's Cost Planning Division, purchasing, and key suppliers to interpret the current supply chain situation. Collaborates with relevant stakeholders to interpret impacts on other metrics resulting from cost proposals (e.g., quality, ergonomics, maintenance).
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested by management.
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
20+ years of experience in product development and design team leadership.
Technical expertise in materials and manufacturing processes. Ability to assess if a design is optimized for cost, investment, and customer satisfaction. Basic proficiency in CATIA (not specialist), Excel, PowerPoint for analysis and reporting. Works well independently or in teams in a fast-paced environment.
Travel: 2-3 times annually, varies by project. Overtime expected depending on project demands.
