Job Description

Position: Assistant Coach Boys Golf - Fall 2026 Montezuma-Cortez High School

Reports To

Head coach, athletic director, and respective principal.

Supervises

Athletes and teams assigned; assumes supervising control over all athletes in the program when needed.

Job Goal

To carry out the aims and objectives of the sports program, instruct athletes in fundamentals, strategy, and physical training, and promote socially acceptable character development, self‑discipline, self‑confidence, and pride of accomplishment. To upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Have thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Montezuma-Cortez Re-1 Schools’ Board of Education and implement them.
  • Understand existing system, state, and league regulations; implement consistently.
  • Understand the administrative line of command and refer all student/parent requests through proper channels. Attend required meetings.
  • Maintain discipline and work to increase morale and cooperation within the school sports program.
Administrative Duties
  • Assist in scheduling and providing transportation to tournaments and special sport events.
  • Assist in preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adhere to scheduled facility times; coordinate with maintenance and school employees.
  • Provide documentation to the athletic director to fulfill state and system requirements for physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
  • Provide safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment.
Student Responsibilities
  • Mentor each athlete, promoting character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  • Monitor student athletes’ grades and conduct.
  • Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards at all practices, games, and travels.
  • Explain training rules and any unique regulations to participants.
  • Initiate programs and policies regarding injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
  • Complete paperwork for disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submit within 24 hours.
  • Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
  • Determine discipline, delineate due‑process procedures, and communicate with parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
  • Assist athletes in college or advanced educational selection.
Equipment and Facilities
  • Accountable for all equipment; collect cost of lost or unreturned items, arrange issuance, storage, and submit annual inventory and records.
  • Monitor equipment rooms and coaches’ offices, authorizing entry.
  • Permit athletes to be only in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times.
  • Inspect locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking cleanliness.
  • Maintain cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
  • Secure doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving if custodians are not on duty.
  • Instill respect for equipment and school property.
Program Responsibilities
  • Write press releases and school announcements.
  • Instruct team on rule changes.
  • Maintain record of team statistics and lettering requirements.
  • Attend staff meetings and conduct scouting assignments.
  • Arrive early before practice, contests, and meetings to prepare and remain afterward to assist players or participate in staff discussions.
  • Never criticize, admonish, or argue with any staff member in front of players or parents.
  • Strive to improve skills by attending clinics and using available resources.
  • Attend most contests of other teams in the program when possible.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the nature of the position.

  • At least 1 year of relevant experience preferred.
