THE POSITION

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The Corrections Officer Trainee participates in formal training sessions and on-the-job assignments to develop skills and techniques in the custody and supervision of inmates in a state correctional facility. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a corrections officer. Responsibilities include:

  1. Direct and indirect contact with inmates and visitors.
  2. Maintaining security in various facility areas by monitoring inmate activities.
  3. Observing inmate behavior and reporting unusual activities.
  4. Working a 40-hour week with shifts, overtime, and working in all areas as assigned.
  5. Participating in formal instruction in sociology, psychology, court procedures, and other relevant topics.
  6. Assisting inmates in their adjustment and understanding facility rules.
  7. Preparing written reports and responding to emergencies.
  8. Uniforms are provided. This is a full-time position with starting pay at $22.52/hour, plus shift differential up to $1.25/hour.
  9. Eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  10. This union position is subject to collective bargaining provisions.
  11. Benefits include health, vision, dental, and wellness programs.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

Qualifications include:

  • PA residency requirement is waived for this title.
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions.

Legal requirements:

  • Pass a background check and meet CJIS compliance.
  • Complete a medical exam, psychological evaluation, and drug screening.
