Job summary

Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a Corrections Officer to supervise and care for inmates at the Van Buren County Jail. You will work under a Corrections Sergeant, ensuring security and humane living conditions in accordance with jail policies.

The role requires guarding inmates, performing entries, and coordinating with command staff. Applicants must meet MSCTC LCOPAT and pass background, drug, and medical screenings. This is a full-time, on-site post with 12-hour shifts.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 1–3 years of responsible work experience.
• Must pass MSCTC LCOPAT physical test.

Responsibilities

• Book, fingerprint, and photograph prisoners; prepare records of all prisoners' personal property at detention time.
• Safeguard inmates' personal belongings and return on release.
• Screen inmates for medical and psychological conditions and report findings to a supervisor.
• Physically and verbally control disruptive inmates.
• Escort inmates for recreation, medical visits, court appearances, attorney visits, transfers to other facilities.
• Maintain head counts including inmate movements.
• Enforce inmate rules by writing reports and informing supervisors.
• Investigate violations of inmate rules and prepare required reports.
• Inspect cells and premises for security and sanitation.
• Distribute food trays, laundry, mail, commissary orders, and prescribed medications.
• Maintain cell checks at a minimum of one per hour.
• Take bonds and release inmates legally.
• Administer PBT to inmates to determine alcohol content.
